Heard and McDonald Islands are home to birds, while Jan Mayen has only the occasional human presence
When the White House published a complete list of its reciprocal tariffs — running over several pages and naming close to 200 countries and territories — it was topped by China, a country of more than 1.4 billion people and home to the second largest economy in the world, after the United States. Its reciprocal tariff rate was 37 per cent.
But scroll to the bottom of the list and you’ll find some lesser known parts of the world that have also been slapped with reciprocal tariffs. Raising eyebrows (and perhaps ruffling a few feathers) are Heard and McDonald Islands, which are listed at 10 per cent, the lowest rate offered by the Trump administration.
Article content That tariff will be hard to collect, however, since the islands are uninhabited, save by seals, penguins and other birds. They are also one of the most remote places on Earth; though owned by Australia since 1947, they are roughly 4,000 kms from Australia and an almost equal distance from Madagascar. The nearest mainland is Antarctica, and that’s some 1,600 kms away.

LOL!.........YES!................Took me a second!.............
well, if those birds have been dumping (maybe shipping USA too much guano?) then protective tariffs are definitely in order!
:)
“hey boys, nobody ever heard of this place, am I right?”
“you’re not funny, bro.”
Actually, this is not stupid.
If they were left out of the deal, I am sure, some entrepreneuring entity would set up an operation on those islands and use them to export to USA tariff free!
My.uber-lib sister posted something on FB about “No tariffs for penguins!!!”
I thought she was trying to be funny. Turns out she wasn’t.
Oh, well.
While the Media is having a laugh over this there is a good reason for doing it.
An unscrupulous Aussie exporter could try and get around the tariffs by marking his goods as being from those islands and not the Australian mainland................
Zackley!..................
THEY CAN LAUGH, BUT THERE WAS A GOOD REASON FOR IT................
Luckily
Kingman Reef
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingman_Reef
the smallest external territory on the Earth, is administered by the US. Otherwise, it would have to be included too!
It means that you didn’t read the rest of the posts on the thread before you shot your NeverTrump mouth off.
Too bad.
“The Heard Island and McDonald penguins have been taking advantage of us for too long — it’s about time we stood up to them!”
Guano futures are up!!!
Eurotrash makes a joke!!!
but those territories are Australian and under Australia. The islands are a territory (Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands) of Australia administered from Hobart by the Australian Antarctic Division of the Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. The administration of the territory is established in the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Act 1953, which places it under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory, with the non-criminal laws of the Australian Capital Territory and the criminal laws of Jervis Bay Territory applying to the Territory
No exporter could get around tariffs as this is under the conditions already put on Australia
Eurotrash, tear down that tariff wall!!!
