Heard and McDonald Islands are home to birds, while Jan Mayen has only the occasional human presence
When the White House published a complete list of its reciprocal tariffs — running over several pages and naming close to 200 countries and territories — it was topped by China, a country of more than 1.4 billion people and home to the second largest economy in the world, after the United States. Its reciprocal tariff rate was 37 per cent.
But scroll to the bottom of the list and you’ll find some lesser known parts of the world that have also been slapped with reciprocal tariffs. Raising eyebrows (and perhaps ruffling a few feathers) are Heard and McDonald Islands, which are listed at 10 per cent, the lowest rate offered by the Trump administration.
Article content That tariff will be hard to collect, however, since the islands are uninhabited, save by seals, penguins and other birds. They are also one of the most remote places on Earth; though owned by Australia since 1947, they are roughly 4,000 kms from Australia and an almost equal distance from Madagascar. The nearest mainland is Antarctica, and that’s some 1,600 kms away.

The penguins are shown discussing the tariffs - they’re not sure how to react yet.
PING!...............
So if the island doesn’t actually export anything to us, does a tariff matter?
While the Media is having a laugh over this there is a good reason for doing it.
An unscrupulous Aussie exporter could try and get around the tariffs by marking his goods as being from those islands and not the Australian mainland................
Don’t care. Still backing Trump.
(Part of…) The real reason why we are drowning in debt and suffering lowering living standards are these crazy expensive entitlement programs. in other words out of control spending.
It will hurt to cut those back, perhaps his idea is to build up the economy first by these tariffs then cut when we have plenty of good paying jobs?
I hope it works because we are toast in the mid-terms if these tariffs cause an economic downturn.
The real reason for these tariffs is to get the other countries to remove their tariffs on our goods and services..............
Sometimes nature’s a lot cuter than we are.
Tariffs maybe keeping the Chinese from taking them over.
Exactly.....................
You’re probably right. Or China. Although I fully expect China is already in the process of inventing new and creative ways to screw us.
What’s to stop China from sending their goods to a lower-tariff country, setting up a satellite company under some other name, and then sending it from that country as the origin?
Hopefully there are measures in place to deal with that, because I fully expect them to try it.
It means they didn’t research each place.
A large part of the penguin population there are of the flying variety. I use them for shipping, much like Amazon uses drones. Sometimes they insist on stopping at home before continuing to the final delivery destination. Inconvenient, and not the best business model, but it's the only way I can get them to work for me and they work cheap. Will have to reconsider now.
If you don't think penguins can fly, think again. See vid at link.
...or Red Chinese.
Right, that’s what I hinted at with “getting our economy strong again with good paying jobs”.
Bring back more US factories and get our exports up. Both of which should cause wages to go increase as jobs increase and labor stays the same.
Increased wages are all screwed up by the way of we keep importing more workers than the jobs created.
Shouldn’t that be a Linux ping??
Surely the president of the Penguins will respond reciprocally.
