A veteran real estate developer and friend of former President Barack Obama is vying to build a 26-story hotel blocks away from the incoming Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park.
The developer, Allison Davis, submitted a rezoning application to City Council last week for a parcel of vacant land he owns at 6402-20 S. Stony Island Avenue. The plot, currently zoned for a community shopping district, needs council approval to get rezoned as a planned business development, clearing the way for the hotel’s construction.
Davis is an attorney who co-founded the law firm Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland, where Obama worked prior to his political career.
Planned for the southwest corner of 64th Street and Stony Island Avenue, the 36,087-square-foot development includes 250 rooms, covered parking, retail, office space and an outdoor terrace with foliage and grills.
The proposal comes a little more than a year before the Obama Presidential Center is slated to open across the street in Jackson Park, an $800 million development that promises to draw tens of thousands to the neighborhood each year – and a flurry of investment. According to an investigation by the Illinois Answers Project, investors have been buying up property in neighborhoods around the park at higher rates than anywhere else in the city, sending fears of gentrification and displacement among residents soaring.
According to documents submitted to City Council, Davis filed the application as head of Aquinnah Investment Trust, an investment group. The building will be represented by DLA Piper LLC.
The zoning reclassification application was referred to the Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards, which will meet on April 15.

I’ll bet the hotel will be finished long before the lie-barry. Which is bogged down in DIE lawsuits.
There goes the neighborhood.
How about a prison instead.
A rest stop for weary travelers would be nice right at the liebarry location
Some good news - Hussein has a new chef for the monstrosity - located next to a lake. STAY AWAY FROM THE LAGOON! And always look for crumbling cement. I wonder if Big Mike’s new energy drink will be on tap.

Zoning change? No problem. City Councilmen are relatively cheap.
Maybe Larry Sinclair can do the front desk.
Will the hotel also look like a flak tower?
Really? The developer does realize it's in Chicago, right?
Will there be a police budget for the place? I bet there will be.
And the first inmates can be the Clinton crime cartel.
Who will want to stay in an unsafe place overnight?
Will they charge by the hour and have a huge privacy fence?
Sounds more like a laundry than a hotel.
And some space should be reserved for a new "Moo And Oink" location, so the area does not turn into a food desert.
