Patient dies from rabies after organ transplant from infected donor
Fox News ^ | March 27, 2025 | Melissa Rudy

Patient received the organ in Ohio and died in Michigan, health officials confirmed..

A Michigan resident has died of rabies after receiving an organ transplant.

The patient, who received the transplant at an Ohio hospital in December 2024, died of the fatal virus in January 2025, a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) confirmed

...

"The person was a recent organ transplant recipient, and a public health investigation determined they contracted rabies through the transplanted organ,"

...

The organ donor was not a Michigan or Ohio resident, according to health officials. No additional information has been provided about the resident or the donor.

...

While organs are routinely screened for infectious diseases, cancers, quality and functionality prior to transplant, rabies testing is not typically performed.

"There is currently no country or institution that requires the screening of rabies among donors before organ transplantation surgery," according to information published by the National Institutes of Health.

...

In 2013, the CDC confirmed the death of four people in Maryland who contracted rabies after receiving organs from the same donor.

In 2004, the agency reported the rabies deaths of three people who received organs from a common infected donor.

...

Rabies is almost always fatal if the infected person does not receive medical attention before symptoms begin.

Makes you wonder about all that Chinese organ harvesting. I doubt they screen the Uygurs and Falun Gong prisoners before they harvest them.

“ Rabies infections in the United States are exceedingly rare, with only one to three cases nationwide on a yearly basis”

But other countries have much higher rates of infection

Where did the donor come from?

I was in a hea,th c,inic one day when 2 people came in a woman first, who had been bitten mu,tiple times by a rabid fox, a d later her husband came in. Also bitten several, times. The woman had to strangle the fox to stop it from biting her- she had been walking ahead of her husband down to a beach along a long pathway in the woods a d got atta ked. The husband heard her screaming, and was also attacked. Her legs were all mangled up and bloody. Was quite a scene at the clinic- but I imagine quite the scene at the beach too.

That should generate a nice lawsuit.

I saw a raccoon acting strangely in a parking lot in one of our county parks, biting its own tail and running around in a little circle in a frenzy, and of course people recognized it as rabid and called for immediate help from the police and every other emergency number. The county police came out real quick and shot the animal and took it away. BTW, spread the word for people to steer clear of feral cats, A friend was bitten and scratched by a cat while trying to help it, the cat ran away and couldn’t be located for trapping and testing, the person’s doctor reported it to some agency who sent people the next day to conduct this woman to a local hospital to begin involuntary rabies shots, she had no choice.

A little raccoon walked up to our dog and bit her on the face. My daughter pulled it off and it bit her too.

Obviously, rabies shots for the two of them.

But most rabies cases in this country come from unrecognized bat bites. Someone picks up a bat, has no idea they have been bitten.

I’ve had rabies shots twice - presumed bat contact.

They aren’t bad. No more deep in the stomach.

My advice: if you need them, see if you can go to an infectious disease doctor. Cheaper than the ER, and your family doctor won’t have them.

The donor with rabies may have died from a car accident, no signs or symptoms of rabies.

Treatment has changed:
Rabies treatment involves a series of vaccinations, typically administered in the arm, not the stomach. If you’ve been exposed to rabies, you will receive rabies immune globulin and a series of rabies vaccine shots to prevent the virus from infecting you.

Indeed. This is scary stuff. I received a new liver almost 4 years ago and doing good. Nevertheless, nothing in life is for certain. It seems like all we can do is roll the dice and hope they don’t come up snake eyes.

Me, a man in his mid sixties, getting the liver of a teenager….

Yes I most certainly DO wonder what happened to this person, but no problems. Just living with that fact.

Rabies can be dormont for many years ( in rare cases decades). There may have been no reason to test the donor. But as already been suggested there will probably be a lawsuit by survivors trying to get rich.
