Russia remands Jewish billionaire Moshkovich in custody for two months on fraud charges

Jewish Russian farming billionaire Vadim Moshkovich has been remanded in custody for two months by a Moscow court following his detention on suspicion of large-scale fraud, the highest-profile arrest in years of a major businessman in Russia.

Moshkovich, who Forbes says has a fortune of $2.7 billion, appeared in a glass cage in Moscow’s Meshchansky court, handcuffed and carrying a copy of David Eagleman’s book “The Brain” and a bottle of water.

Court documents show that Moshkovich is accused of large-scale fraud and could face up to 10 years in jail if convicted. Moshkovich pleaded not guilty to the charges.

“Vadim Moshkovich, the founder of Rusagro, was sent to the pre-trial detention center,” Moscow’s court service says, adding that the court dismissed appeals from his lawyers for him to be granted house arrest or bail.

The arrest of Moshkovich, who started out selling computers amid the chaos of post-Soviet Russia before building one of Russia’s most powerful agricultural holdings, sent shockwaves through Russia’s business elite.

There was no comment from the Kremlin on the arrest.

I wonder how much of that he’s going to have to pay to get out of jail.

Standard Putin playbook. Jail the owner and then nationalize the company.

“Wonder if he’s actually guilty”

In Russia it sure seems as though everyone is guilty.

Probably is guilty.

In fact, I have zero doubt about his guilt, without knowing facts, simply because that’s how it works there.

The better question is “why him?”, given innumerous others are just as guilty, if not more so.

I would assume he failed to pay tribute sufficiently by not giving the Russian “Big Guy” his 10%.

But there is a lot of anger in Russia about corruption and it’s traditional in Russia to blame a Jew for whatever. So it could be that, too. Probably not though. I’m betting he just failed to pay his bribes.

His company is the only large enterprise that is profitable right now in Russia.

This is a perferct summary of how things work over there.

You don’t rise to be a big fish in Russia or Ukraine for that matter without having “some” dirt under the fingernails.

Corruption is endemic and starts at the grass roots level, from paying a bribe to a traffic cop, a fire inspector you name it etc, all the way to the top.

Everyone has “dirt” (kompromat) on them and the authorities sure do like it that way, because everyone has some skeleton in the closet that can be brought out (or be threatened to be brought out) at any time.

>> But there is a lot of anger in Russia about corruption

With the war in Ukraine and having gone over on war footing, and the propaganda bleating about enemies external and internal, it is just a delicious cherry on top of the cake.

Nailing “a Jew” for any reason (valid or contrived) resonates with many average Russian, you can feel it in the comments section.

Everyone has skeletons in the closet. Corruption starts at the grassroots level, from the basic mundane stuff.

Cynicism and nihilism abound from a very early age, that despite all of the “Orthodox traditional values” propaganda that the “Russian World” is supposed to be (but is not).

Ukraine BTW is not any different, they only differ on Russian imperialsm (Soviet glory, Russian Empire glory) vs. the Ukrainian nationalism. The majority of the populations are very similar in their basic worldview (fatalism, nihilism, acceptance of corruption as a fact or life).

“ is company is the only large enterprise that is profitable right now in Russia.”

That could be the third possibility, too, to add to that the two already listed.

You only shake down someone with money for the same reason robbers rob banks: that’s where the money is.

No reluctance in this case by the Times of Israel to label him a “Jewish Billionaire”.

Sadly enough, we have this distinct award:

The United States has the largest prison system, with over 1.8 million incarcerated individuals as of the end of 2023.

China follows closely behind with an estimated prison population of 1.69 million.

These numbers reflect the high incarceration rates in both countries compared to others globally.

Just the facts, and China eve has 3x more citizens than we do.

Russia ranks 17th globally in terms of the number of prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants, with an incarceration rate of 416 per 100,000 people as of 2018.

This rate places Russia first in Europe.

Is that because Europe only charges the white citizens of crimes, as they turn a blind eye to non-white criminal acts?
