Massie: People on food stamps (EBT) shouldn't be allowed to buy Coke or Pepsi

@RepThomasMassie
People should not be allowed to use food stamps (EBT) to purchase sugary drinks like Coke and Pepsi.
Libertarian arguments about choice do not apply here. The money being used for EBT was extracted from taxpayers who have no choice in whether to give up their money.

I'd rather them drink Coca Cola and Pepsi than "Ishtar's Herbal Organic Tonic".

EBT should only cover raw ingredients. Fruits, vegetables, uncooked meats, flour, etc..

When I was growing up my family spent a short time during a coal mine lay off getting “relief.” I recall getting powdered eggs and a type of meat in a can. We may have gotten cheese, but I was pretty young and don’t recall.

People on food stamps should only be given a monthly supply of rice, beans, cereal and milk. They should be provided subsistence and little more. NO more fancy spending sprees for people who won’t work. Do that and watch the food stamp rolls shrink greatly. Of course we won’t though. Our Govt only exists to exacerbate problems, not eliminate them.

When I worked for the grocery stores in the 1970s, the USDA banned using food stamps for soft drinks.
To: Bullish
It’s actually a good idea you and others have regarding the restrictions to basics. It would be good start

But he’s right. I’d limit food stamps to some basic, health foods.

How much would it save? (curious and maybe some of you can mention it to your Reps...)
Bullish’s idea is good

This is where education has really failed and marketing has won. Soda, chips, candy are all bad when taken IN EXCESS, which is what many many people do. People will not eat an Apple or banana but they will knock back a big bag of Doritos and a Mountain Dew in a heartbeat, I’m guilty of such excess myself and now I have to work very hard to get some of my health back
lack Education is one of the culprits here, people just don’t understand why junk food sucks and mass marking and of crap and junk food should be curtailed much like the push to end pharmaceutical commercials, bombard people with hours of fit and in shape people scarfing piles of chips and tall cold glasses of Coke, sure people are going to get the wrong idea.
I have no problem with people OCCASIONALLY having a soda and some chips it goes to quality of life, having a little junk food in moderation isn’t the worst thing, people have legitimate stress in their lives so banning junk food would give them one more reason to be pissed and that’s just unnecessary IMHO.

Too many folks on "assistance" buy convenience foods over cheaper and healthier basic items.
Maybe this has something to do with why too may folks on "assistance" are ridiculously obese.

I’d add in some cabbage, potatoes, carrots, etc. Basic cheese, etc.
To: RandFan
If I'm paying their food bills I want only basic protein sources, basic fruits and vegetables....basic everything.I want their mealls to look just like the meals that one gets in prison...nutritious and safe.
NOTHING MORE!

Not much, the whole program is probably under 120 billion.

There was an independent investigation that found out that Coca Cola got 25% of their sales from food stamps
To: RandFan
It’s the way it used to be when the food stamp programs were brought about. There were many restrictions on the food products they could buy with them and it made a lot of sense. Big govt seems to thrive these days on programs that don’t make any sense at all.
It’s the Cloward/Piven approach. Overload all the govt programs so they have to crash and destroy capitalist society.
