As Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer knows better than anyone, the Democratic base is pissed off. And not just a little.
The intensity of the anger roiling the party is at a historic level, suggesting a breach between congressional Democrats and the party grassroots so severe that it could reshape the 2026 primary election season.
Congressional Democrats have typically enjoyed higher popularity with their voting base than their Republican counterparts. But the trauma of the 2024 presidential election defeat appears to have ruptured that relationship. A review of Quinnipiac University’s annual first-quarter congressional polling reveals that, for the first time in the poll’s history, congressional Democrats are now underwater with their own voters in approval ratings.
Just 40 percent of Democrats approve of the job performance of congressional Democrats, compared to 49 percent who disapprove. That’s a dramatic change from this time last year, when 75 percent of Democrats approved compared to just 21 percent who disapproved. The Democratic base’s disillusionment runs so deep that it’s eerily reminiscent of Republican grassroots sentiment in the period leading up to Donald Trump’s takeover of the Republican Party.
The numbers are clear: No longer satisfied with the status quo in their party, Democrats are on the verge of a Tea Party-style, intra-party revolt.
The Democratic approval data is unlike any in recent history — and it isn’t a case of bitter, disaffected partisans reacting to a loss in the last election. The first time Democrats lost an election to Donald Trump, their congressional approval ratings within the party actually ticked up, as Democratic base voters largely approved of the ways that party leadership resisted the Trump administration in early 2017. The same phenomenon surfaced among Republicans in 2021 when, despite Trump’s defeat and the subsequent chaos of Jan. 6, Republican voters remained...

Twenty months is an eternity in politics.
In this country, when politicians dictate rather than serve it still doesn’t go well for them, thank goodness.
They’re mad that they lost. Plain and simple. They don’t care about what issues caused it, they’re mad at the fact that they lost, and appear impudent in the current government.
Large portions of the base that still identifies as democrat are literally mentally ill. Or demon-possessed. Or both.
The brainwashing (or dirtying) of the propaganda has taken its toll, and things will get a lot worse before they can get better. There is no way to reason with those who allow themselves to be subjected to cult techniques.
It’s not about radical or not. It’s about perception that their Congressional leaders didn’t do enough to block Trump.
I don’t want to put too much weight on these numbers. They reflect dissatisfaction toward inaction, not agenda or ideology.
We did the same thing with the Turtle and Gowdy shows...
Unfortunately, it is still a while till the next election and the dem propaganda machine will be at full force blaming Trump, so let's not start counting our chickens.
“Congressional Democrats have typically enjoyed higher popularity with their voting base than their Republican counterparts.”
Because Republicans are more likely to be well read on who is doing the bad in DC. They’re more likely to understand both parties are at fault, while D’s tend to be “auto-Dems” and question nothing. AT least in the percentages.
OR, they know the game is rigged, and they’re profiting from it.
I’ve been voting R for decades as a protest against the communist party, but I know I’m still voting for the lesser of two evils.
Unless liberals read it on Huffington Post or Apple News, they won’t hear it or believe it.
We need to remember that in politics sometimes things change quickly.
The R’s have had to put up with R’s voting with the Dems for years. Notice how the R’s don’t try to ruin their lives. These people are unhinged crazies.
The crazies don’t deserve any respect. They deserve a beat down. That’s the only thing they understand because they don’t respond to reason and they see any form of compromise as a weakness to exploit.
For some reason it seems hard for R’s to understand that simple reality.
...but in 2025, it's not about the law...it's about who OWNS the law.
On the contrary. The ‘grass roots’ are spoiled brats enraged because daddy schumer and mommy pelosi haven’t made the bad orange man stop what he’s doing.
Those numbers help explain why the RATs continue to embrace the wrong side of 80 - 20 issues.
Their most lunatic supporters demand it.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a legit third party emerge from this.
