Global sea level rose faster than expected last year alarming scientists

Last year saw an “unexpected” amount of sea level rise around the world, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration said Thursday.

An analysis led by the agency found that the rate of rise was nearly a quarter of an inch per year, compared to an expected rate of 0.17 inches.

That’s a concerning statistic considering the hazards rising sea levels bring, including sending potentially deadly storm surge farther inland, threatening urban infrastructure, eroding coastlines and disrupting ecosystems, and resulting in more frequent high-tide flooding.

“The rise we saw in 2024 was higher than we expected,” Josh Willis, a sea level researcher at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, said in a statement. “Every year is a little bit different, but what’s clear is that the ocean continues to rise, and the rate of rise is getting faster and faster.”

NASA said the increase was due to an “unusual” amount of ocean warming, as well as an influx of meltwater from glaciers and other land-based ice.

As the Earth warms due to heat-trapping greenhouse gas emissions, more than 90 percent of that heat is absorbed by oceans. That causes ocean temperatures to rise and the water expands. It’s a process known as “thermal expansion” that contributes to rising sea levels. The planet’s warming has caused roughly a third of the global sea level rise observed by satellite altimeters since 2004.

" quarter of an inch per year, compared to an expected rate of 0.17 inches"

LOL, so it's 0.25" vs 0.17", or an extreme 0.08 inches. And how do you measure 1/4" sea level rise accurately? I would expect a 0.08" to be in the margin on error, if not the entire quarter inch.

Fear politics. Of course the sun on the ocean has no effect.

I live way above sea level.

Last I heard Obozo’s Marthas Vineyard estate was still high and dry.

Lol.

This sounds bad, maybe it’s time to Condemn all property below 200’ MSL within 1 mile of the Coast Nationwide, NO HABITATION OF ANY KIND.

“sea level rise”
“alarming”

~~~~
Apparently, the human race are now hardwood trees living near coasts that cannot move, and over the pace of centuries, are threatened by sea levels rising by centimeters!!!
Oh the horror!
Projected at best...totally based on input data...and you know what they say....Cr** in...cr** out.
It's immeasurable.....it's called data manipulation.
Hawaii hasn’t “tipped over” yet, nor is Florida underwater.
Not to mention the place he has in Oahu, which used to be Robin Master’s place on Magnum P.I., lol.
If that Island hasn’t flipped over yet, maybe sea level rise has submerged it. /s
The arrogance of these people, thinking they can measure global sea levels to the nearest hundredth of an inch.
But it’s probably not just arrogance. It’s probably arrogance + willful lying.
By the way, where’s_the_Outrage?, you are very right in bringing up a “margin of error” discussion. Every scientific measurement has an associated margin of error. Such values are easily calculated.
Yet we never see them in “Climate Change” articles. I wonder why.
🤔
Scientists gotta alarm. Your remark on margin of error is spot-on.
"An analysis led by the agency found that the rate of rise was nearly a quarter of an inch per year, compared to an expected rate of 0.17 inches."
I'm so concerned about the 0.25"/yr rate of rise that I have marked my March, 2090, calendar not to buy any shoreline property then (assuming the ocean level doesn't rise or even decrease in the future).
No, beachfront property owners on the oceans do not appear to be clamoring to sell.
I wonder how many different places worldwide are measured to obtain this change in sea levels? Isn’t there a place in the Mediterranian region perhaps, that has a watermark for ocean level.that is unchanged since the 19th century? I recall reading about it here.
If this came from some pseudo scientist at NASA, maybe the DOGE needs to be alerted to where cuts need to be made there in NASA.
