Drinking two small glasses of cherry juice a day may reduce gut inflammation and boost quality of life in bowel disease patients, a new study shows.
The largest human trial of its kind found consuming 130ml of diluted Montmorency tart cherry juice twice a day for six weeks reduced gut inflammation markers in people with mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis by 40%.
Participants also reported a 9% improvement in health-related quality of life when taking the fruit drink supplement while receiving standard medication treatment.
Montmorency tart cherries are rich in a nutrient known as anthocyanin, a natural compound that gives the fruit its distinctive red color and sour-sweet taste and can also be found in dark-colored fruit and vegetables such as blackberries, blood oranges and eggplant.
Previous analysis has shown 30 ml of Montmorency tart cherry concentrate contains 9.117 mg/ml of anthocyanins, which is equivalent to eating about 100 cherries.
For the study, the researchers randomly assigned 35 ulcerative colitis patients aged between 18 to 65 to receive either a 130ml Montmorency tart cherry beverage—made using 100 ml of water and 30 ml of concentrated juice—or a dummy drink with a similar taste, color and consistency.
The trial was single blind, meaning only the researchers knew who was receiving the real supplement or placebo, which they consumed twice a day for six weeks.
Patients' quality of life as well as physical health, mental health and disease symptoms were measured using a variety of standardized questionnaires, including the Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire (IBDQ), which looked at self-reported symptoms of ulcerative colitis.
Their blood and stool samples were also analyzed and study volunteers were also asked to keep a food diary to evaluate whether they had made any dietary changes that could influence study outcomes.

I heard cherry juice is good for gout as well?
Not just the gut, over the long term. Everything works towards the skin.
Ping
Tart Cherry juice is very bitter. Not the easiest juice to drink for the average person. It’s probably very good for you, but be forewarned, it’s no Hawaiian Punch.
Makes you Fart.
Bad carb for diabetics.
I would have to pass.
Maybe I can try eggplant.
I used to drink a concoction that included concentrated cherry juice. It was a little bitter, but I loved it. Not cheap. If I drank, I think it would be good in vodka.
“I heard cherry juice is good for gout as well?”
I understand it is also...
2 glasses of real cherry juice a day, will cost you 25-30 bucks a week. Can I drink 3 glasses of cherry kool-aid instead?
I wonder if ivermectin or some other off patent dirt cheap drug would be effective as well.
If I have a gout flare up (which is EXTREMELY RARE, given my preventive capsules) I take a cup of the juice and in HOURS, I start to feel better. The pain and pressure start to recede almost immediately; within 20 minutes on average. I drink it until the pain is completely gone, which is about a day. Can sleep at night without the painful throbbing and redness.
Yes, I think it's God's perfect Rx for gout.
Why are you bombarding the forum?
That’s a good idea.
Interesting. Mark for reference.
Thanks

I drink about 10 oz for gout. They don’t tell you that 2 glasses is about 250-300 calories. Probably as much sugar as a coke. Maybe it’s fructose but still a lot of sugar.
Because I want to annoy you.
