I’m hoping to hear from some fellow freeper thoughts on retiring in Thailand. We’re looking at Chiang Mai as our target destination. We’ve been to Thailand before; 1989, 1992 and most recently in 2014 (so we know what it is like right now - big changes lol). I know there is a lot of info available on YouTube and other sites, but I want to check here with anyone who may have actually made the move and what their suggestions may be.
I did that too. I prefer America.

Caught there after fleeing the us for crimes- kcant remeber his name, but he was in the news constantly for awhile. Remember seeing him on the plane back to the us- I think Thailand helped in his capture if I remember right. He was a real sicko.
it’s also a Hotspot for prostitutes- lots of crime there too. Folks posting about it are just being funny- it’s not a place folks shoukd want to go- lots vids on YouTube talking about how to survive it without being a victim if a person must travel there.
Watch out for denge fever there- a person who was missionary there got it- I guess it can’t be got rid of once a person gets it. It’s called the “ break-bone fever” and is as bad as it sounds I guess.
I think you’re thinking about the guy who was suspected in the Jon-Bene Ramsey case. The child prostitution was horrible and out in the open there back in the early nineties (things I saw made me vomit, yes, seriously vomit for hours). As I understand it, that has been cleaned up a lot, but not eradicated. They got those Lady Boys, too.

A number of years ago, a fellow I worked with, very fit, always working out, in excellent shape, got West Nile virus from a mosquito bite. He was off work for months, and almost died from it. Luckily, he eventually recovered. Who would have thought that a disease with such a name, could occur in Alberta?

Older western men usually like Thailand more than western women, because they are treated better by the locals. Of the few retired western couples around, the wives tend to look sour and unhappy. Solo western men have a much better go of it, especially if they meet a local Thai woman to help them navigate the country.
Once someone has enough wealth to support their needs, relative wealth compared to their neighbors leads to more happiness than having more money. In the USA, an older man might be in the top 20% of wealth, but be practically invisible in public. Overnight, that very same man living in Thailand is in the top 1%, and noticed everywhere they go. There are many variables, but for some, Thailand turns out to be the happiest place they've ever lived. If you have some money, it's worth a try! If you are poor, Thailand is probably not your best option.
If you like going to restaurants and having shopping options, Bangkok is the place to be. Downtown is too busy, but being 30 minutes taxi to the east, towards the big airport, might be just right. It is not necessary or desirable to own a car unless you live farther into the suburbs.

Got a buddy from the Navy that retired to Thailand. Married a native there. Learned the language and customs and has never looked back. I visited Thailand in the 90’s... It had a 70% AIDS rate. I found the people friendly, the food outstanding and the country side breathtaking. There are places in Bangkok that a round eye should NEVER go but its like that in every city. Check around Phuket and Patayya beach. They are more used to European/American expats and/or tourists.

I understand I can research everything on the internet. I’m sure you realize that most of what is on the internet was placed there by people. We’re social animals. Reinforcing everything I’ve learned online with actual interaction with fellow humans offers an added level of comfort. That is why other people’s experiences and opinions have value.
