We’re Considering Retiring in Thailand. Thoughts?
Self | 3/925 | Self

I’m hoping to hear from some fellow freeper thoughts on retiring in Thailand. We’re looking at Chiang Mai as our target destination. We’ve been to Thailand before; 1989, 1992 and most recently in 2014 (so we know what it is like right now - big changes lol). I know there is a lot of info available on YouTube and other sites, but I want to check here with anyone who may have actually made the move and what their suggestions may be.

Just be careful about drinking and violating social norms. All the guys i used to play golf with made a precipitous drop after moving to Chang Mai. Thailand is a high alcohol environment, especially in the ex-pat and tourist areas!!!
I love it there, but trend towards the out islands now.

One word……healthcare.

as you age, healthcare becomes more important. I’ll wager Thai healthcare isn’t anywhere near US healthcare

Where I stay I do not encounter English much at all. I divide my time mostly between Đồng Nai and Cam Đức. I have become vicarious grandpa to two families, one in each place.

I don’t think I’d want to be in any Asian country if war breaks out with China. I wouldn’t even want to be in Guam or Hawaii.

You’re mistaken. Please go on YouTube to see healthcare options in Thailand.

The laws are easy, the social norms can be a bit tricky. :)

My mother was given a hat, since she does not wear hats she gave it to me, I wore the hat tilted to keep the sun out of my eyes, my dad received a marriage offer for me.

Apparently wearing the hat tilted to the left meant that I was looking for a husband. Since I was only 11 at the time the man understood that I was not quite ready for marriage yet but he wanted to get his son's offer in.

Well, they have lots of child sex slaves if that's the sort of people you want surrounding you...the govt allows it..

I guess if you have no family it's perfectly fine to run away and hide as long as Uncle Sam keeps those govt pensions and health care going.

when shtf, they will come after foreigners first.

Less than one %, surely. There is an American community in Nha Trang that I know of and, of course in Hà Nội and Đà There are a lot of Australian tourists that say they will stay, but only a tiny few do. Nẵng There were a lot of Russians in Nha Trang a few years ago but I don’t see them any more. There are some French but they stay low key and a some Koreans. I avoid the foreigners.

Ahhh…you came to the US, made American dollars, and ask on an American web site where you can go and spend all your American dollars. You’re about what I thought. How about reinvesting it in the country that gave you that opportunity?

It is expensive. However, the International Hospital in Bangkok is Top Ten world wide in health care.

If she looks too good to be true, then he is. If she had big hand and feet, he is packing.

Chang Mai is a expat favoriate location.

I think you may need to engage in a 90 day entry, reentry departure to Laos, Cambodia and back to maintian your residence, but I’m not totally sure about that aspect of living there for Americans.

*If you can take a insurance like the Foreign Service Benefit Plan with you, you will have zero out of pocket expenses at Braumrangrad (sp) Hospital.

I figure you likely know this, but Chang Mai is a hub for western missionaries operating throughout SE Asia, with a lot of organizations having operations there, Bible translation work into many tribal languages and so forth. That’s probably a significant part of the expatriate community there.

Why are you on here? I’m genuinely curious given your response to my post.

Some folks think themselves to be extra wise.
