Update on Wisconsin Bear Attack/Home Invasion from 2022
AmmoLand ^ | February 24, 2025 | Dean Weingarten

On May 20, 2022, Chad and Lacey Liske were getting ready for bed in their home near Medford, Wisconsin.

Part of their routine was to take down their bird feeder to prevent damage by bears. Their house was invaded, and they were attacked by a 250 lb black bear. The incident was initially reported on AmmoLand on May 23, 2022. The Liske’s contacted AmmoLand with a detailed account this year. Their account is consistent with the AmmoLand report but includes many interesting details that were not available at the time. The Liskes had three children at home during the fight. Their account, with a few editorial inclusions for clarity, including pictures from the Liskes, is presented below:

From Chad and Lacey Liske:

On Friday, May 20, 2022 at about 11:00 PM my wife and I were finishing watching a TV show and about to begin our routine before bed. That routine consisted of taking our two dogs out for one last potty break and bringing in the bird feeder for the night. The bird feeder is located about 14 feet away from our living room window. About two weeks prior to this incident our bird feeder was taken down by a bear sometime during the night. Because of that visit, we had been bringing the bird feeder in nightly.

This night was slightly different as we usually go to bed at about 10:00 – 10:30 PM but it was Friday and we were up a little later. After I turned the TV off and was just about to get up off the couch, I heard some metal clanking sounds that I believed to be the bird feeder. I looked out the front window but could not see anything.

Not hanging feeders full of food out there would be more sensible.

If you wait until 11 pm to get the feeder down you are waiting far too long after sunset.

I am surprised raccoons didn’t get to it first.

Thanks for the story and updates. In a course I took years ago from a retired FBI firearms instructor, everyone had to complete the FBI firearms qualification drill where shooting with one hand with strong and weak hand were part of the drill. The instructor explained that it is very common to have your strong side arm or hand injured in an attack and you need to have muscle memory for your weak side shooting as well. This story is a good example of that.

I’m picturing this guy fighting with the bear while his wife calls out, “What’s the code to the safe? I can’t hear you. Can you repeat it again?”

Glad to hear everyone is OK.

Once they become habituated they become very dangerous.

Im aware of one just NW of there in the Chequamegon that seems to have gotten familiar with what food on a human menu tasted like and decided to walk around to those human hives smelling for it. The folks in that area put all leftover meat and grease in separate containers each night and then wrapped the containers in plastic bags then put them in the freezer and took the grease to the dump each day because otherwise the bear would push in and climb through the kitchen window.

That was about 10 years ago and I havent heard much so hopefuly that one found it way into the sausage grinder. Well, anyway, it wasnt this one. The point being that while having food out is unwise, it in no way stops the bear from coming in once its smelled the aroma of food coming from inside.
