Three gym rats in their 70s and 80s reveal how they stay fit: ‘It’s like a game of Whack-A-Mole’

You know you should develop a regular exercise routine, but you lack motivation. Promises to yourself are quickly broken, and you never establish enough of the workout habit to experience any rewards.

Exercising as you age is important. It’s not only good for physical health to help prevent falls or enable you to do basic tasks — exercise is also superb for the mind.

“If you want to be cognitively active, it is so important to be physically active,” explained Dr. Amy Eyler, a professor of public health at Washington University in St. Louis. “There is a such a strong connection between these two behaviors.”

You need to exercise all the body parts you want to keep.

My father is 79 and in shape.

I have had numerous medical issues but do my best to stay in shape.

It's important to keep pounding the message of physical fitness and diet.

LIFE EXPECTANCY IS GOING DOWN!!!

“by 2019 it hit 79. But in 2020, life expectancy fell to 77 and dropped further to 76.4 in 2021”

Medicine is advancing, so is pharmacology. We live in a country where people have heat and AC, filtered air, tap water is drinking grade everywhere, the FDA and local code compliance is strict with food quality, storage, transportation and preparation standards. The EPA is strict with environmental, and OSHA is strict with safety standards, and yet people are dying younger.

IMHO: Obesity and a sedentary lifestyle.

I thought gymnastics were mainly for short people.
I could be mistaken.

At 81 I’m still playing Rec basketball twice a week during the school year and outdoors usually three times a week during the summer. When I’m asked about it, my reply is “God has been better to me than I deserve”.

Those 50 and 60 year old kids are killing me, though. Not to mention the occasional 30 something.

Jim Fixx came from a family with heart defects and lived longer than they did.
His Dad died at 35; he lived to 52.

Heart disease. The silent killer.

People think breast cancer is the biggest killer of women.

It's heart disease .... almost always caused by obesity and being sedentary.

Silent killer indeed, as is hypertension.

When on the bicycle trail 3 days ago, I was going at a leisurely Zone 2 pace to build base. I try to keep my HR below 105 on such rides (I’m 69yrs old).

I heard “on your left” and was passed by a grey haired woman of around 60yrs. She was going nearly twice my speed lol

Damn kids:)

I’m a newly retired fitness trainer. Started my career at 52, am now 69. Exercise and eating well are not matters of trying to live forever, but to remain as functional as possible as you age. It’s a nice gift for your potential caregivers, too. I hate to exercise, always have, which is one reason I started studying exercise and eventually became a trainer with two top certifications. I am a couch potato at heart, but I saw how my mom and dad aged, and I want to avoid as much of that as possible. Without arguing with myself, I roll out of bed every morning and get on the treadmill.

Interesting thread.
I’m a fitness instructor, specializing in senior health & fitness. 🙂
Before you start any fitness routine, please, please talk to your doctor first.
It will help you to evaluate your specific needs and also your limitations for your fitness routine.

I'm with you. I've seen what old, fat and sedentary does to one's health and mobility and I want no part of it.

I dislike exercise as much as anyone but I'm always glad that I did it and I always feel better.
