A West German and openly gay woman—is Alice Weidel a surprising choice to lead Germany’s far-right AfD?

As an openly gay politician who lives with her Sri Lanka-born partner in Switzerland, Alice Weidel was an unusual choice to many to lead Germany’s far-right AfD into Sunday’s elections, where it scored its best-ever result.

To her legions of political foes, Weidel serves as a “fig leaf” for a party that has railed against asylum seekers, Islam and multiculturalism and some of whose top figures have voiced revisionist views on Germany’s Nazi past.

On Sunday the 46-year-old, who says Margaret Thatcher is her political idol, led the Moscow-friendly AfD to a record result of around 20 percent.

She told jubilant supporters that the “historic result” showed that the party was on a path to government, if not now then at the next election expected in four years.

Ahead of the vote, Weidel basked in the vocal support of US President Donald Trump’s key allies — especially the tech billionaire Elon Musk — as well as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Far right == in favor of immigration restriction

Period.

In today's Europe "far right" has nothing to to with militarism, regimentation,
monarchism, or any other 19th or 20th century European "far right" things.

And it never meant American style "small government conservatism".
Or "isolationism".

Probably all the insane media coverage calling the afD the new Nazi party had something to do with it. Every European channel was the same.

If that were true, they wouldn’t have done as well as they did. The fact that Alice Weidel was at the TOP of the ticket though, for the highest office in the land, *may* have had something to do with them ultimately not going over the edge. Germany’s version of “swing voters” may have had their reservations given factors like the aforementioned.

It will be great until one of them stabs the other one.

Well they jumped from 10.1% last election to over 20% this election. That is a a 100% jump in support.

Well with the current government, by the next election, with daily riots in the streets, their involvement in a foreign war, 5 million illegals in the streets, and sharia law in many cities, they MIGHT change their mind...

To your point about Dole and McCain, don’t forget about Romney and even the first George Bush with his Read My Lips, I think they all intended to lose. I am certain that Romney intended to lose. I am highly convinced that they all wanted to lose. Why I have no idea. For Romney it was obvious that he was taking a dive in the third round. McCain I never trusted. He was sketchy from the moment he dumped his first wife and hooked up with his second wife, Anheuser Busch.

“don’t forget about Romney and even the first George Bush with his Read My Lips, I think they all intended to lose..”

Actually, they did slip my mind. In my defense, I wasn’t aiming for a comprehensive list of crap people who would have been better remembered if they’d had the sense to step aside when they were no longer the players they had once been. I think it’s common that men hang on past their prime. The reason tomcats and old men die is the same. Every day a tomcat jumps across the chasm of death. As time goes on his margin gets less and less until one day, he doesn’t quite make it and is the most surprised that he’s falling to his death. On their final day, old men wake up and say, “Today I’ll cut down that oak and chop it up.”

Far right is such a useless term here.

- - - - - - -

If you have common sense, the media calls you far right. Always vote for the person the media calls far right.
