A West German and openly gay woman—is Alice Weidel a surprising choice to lead Germany’s far-right AfD?

As an openly gay politician who lives with her Sri Lanka-born partner in Switzerland, Alice Weidel was an unusual choice to many to lead Germany’s far-right AfD into Sunday’s elections, where it scored its best-ever result.

To her legions of political foes, Weidel serves as a “fig leaf” for a party that has railed against asylum seekers, Islam and multiculturalism and some of whose top figures have voiced revisionist views on Germany’s Nazi past.

On Sunday the 46-year-old, who says Margaret Thatcher is her political idol, led the Moscow-friendly AfD to a record result of around 20 percent.

She told jubilant supporters that the “historic result” showed that the party was on a path to government, if not now then at the next election expected in four years.

Ahead of the vote, Weidel basked in the vocal support of US President Donald Trump’s key allies — especially the tech billionaire Elon Musk — as well as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Even if one supports the so called "far right" in European countries for good reason, and appreciates the LGBT of MAGA who support & even work for Trump here at home...It's important not to project the landscape of America's social & spiritual realities onto theirs. Very different.

Personally, it's hard to discern a clear "good guy" in some of these countries because anti-Semitism in particular still looms large in Germany (and Europe general) from all sides.

The rightward shift of gay, lesbian, and bisexual voters is a dynamic playing out across western Europe. In the UK, France, and now Germany, gay voters or their allies are backing far-right or nativist political parties at growing rates. - Vox

Deep state media trying to propagandize its way out of the contradiction its created for itself by calling AfD neo-nazis.

Far right is such a useless term here. These people support a German First policy, no illegals, and less EU interference in their affairs.

The LGBT ‘community’ will be exterminated when Muslims take over. No rocket science as to why a lesbo would oppose that. Too late!

There are PLENTY of 100% conservative gay people in the US.

For a lot of them.. LGB is completely separate from all of the “T” people.

BUT, at some point, I have to think that this is a matter of self preservation.

Esp in EU where they have out of control influx of hard core/ Sharia Islamists that are NOT firnedly to gay people.

Gay, is not a monolithic designation. What matters is the details. “Gay” as it is portrayed in the alphabet bake-my-cake-or-else sense is pure communism. A homosexual, often lumped in with “gay,” is someone who is attracted to the same sex. That sample of the electorate can be liberal, conservative or middle-of-the-road...politically. They resemble one another in the same way a cat resembles a dog from a certain altitude. Two wildly different things when seen up close.

“Far-right” is pejorative, conservative is descriptive.

Even if one supports the so called "far right" [...]

I would urge all conservatives and especially FReepers to avoid adopting this terminology defined by the left-wing!

Don't cede the linguistic ground to them!

AFD is not “Moscow friendly”. It is German-1st, and Euro sceptic. It is only pro EU-centric sources that refer to that as “Moscow friendly”.

The EU would have remained a decent thing if it had remained a purely free trade union and stayed out of becoming the “federal government” over the EU members.

At first glance, I’d have voted for Weidel if I were German, but one wonders if the aforementioned had anything to do with why some voters may have sat out and not taken AfD over the edge.

My hope is for Scott Presler to lead RNC. Tammy Bruce and Richard Grenell are two of my favorite people in the Trump admin. As Trump said: Tim’s about merit, not identity!

But for highest office in the land, I can see how it alienated people who may have otherwise leaned toward that party. (In Germany.)

AfD is labeled by the state-run media and the propagandists as “far right”. Alice herself refers to AfD as “libertarian conservative”. Wanting secure borders and an energy policy that doesn’t rely on unreliable wind and solar energy is hardly what I’d refer to as “far right”. The CDU/CSU SPD coalition is a joke. Get rid of the stupid firewall and form a coalition with AfD instead of SPD. Freddie is just one clown replacing another clown in the new coalition. Nothing will change with him replacing Olaf.

This shows just how deranged is the left. They talk “inclusive,” yet they are the ones who attack most viciously people whom they think should be left who actually think for themselves.

Consider gay and lesbian conservatives, such as this person, the leader of the AfD Party. We will protect them from the radical Muslims. This goes back to Pim Fortuyn of Netherlands.

Does our protection of gays and lesbians from radical Muslims mean we endorse their life style choices? No. We defend everybody. We defend gays and lesbians because they’re part of everybody.

Probably all the insane media coverage calling the afD the new Nazi party had something to do with it. Every European channel was the same.

I could not agree more. A person with that much potential negative, who really was in it for Germany, should support someone more “traditional” for the job. But my take on top politicians is, they got there because of their ego. Their ego won’t let them stand aside even if it’s the difference between success and failure on the national level. Bob Dole and John McCain were horrible candidates. But in both cases it was their last chance at the gold. In their minds, they earned it, and they weren’t going to stand aside even if they knew in advance they would lose. I think, at least at some level, they knew.
