The price of large, white, graded loose shell eggs from caged hens has surged to a record $8.0628 per dozen, driven by the ongoing avian flu outbreak. Over 150 million egg-laying hens have been culled, leading to a 21% decrease in egg production and a severe supply shortage. Some restaurants, like Denny's, are adding surcharges to egg-based meals due to the rising costs. In response, President Donald Trump has brokered a deal with Turkey to import 15,000 tons of eggs, offering temporary relief. However, the situation remains critical, with grocery stores even imposing purchase limits to manage demand. source: USDA
That said, eggs are up 33% since inauguration. While housing inflation is easing, eggs make a more immediate impression on the average consumer, which is undoubtedly a factor in the Conference Board's reported decline in consumer confidence.
(Note that the Board's confidence numbers were consistently far higher under Trump I than under Biden, with the exception of the COVID collapse.)
There. Fixed it.
in San Francisco, I paid $6.99 for a dozen yesterday... rare case of something costing less than the national average.
Does anyone remember when Kalifornia used to be a major supplier of eggs to the nation? That was until many were driven out by dimocrat regulations.
Trader Joe’s are $2.99 so…
“my wife has subscribed to intermittent fasting, which means no more egg breakfasts for me...”
Kitchens are for women only huh? 😏
We have at least 5 dozen in the fridge.
The hens are laying faster than we can eat them.................
Getting ours by barter.
Trading firewood for eggs.
We dont eat that many anyways.
Figure we are getting those eggs for less than a buck a dozen.
We are getting them for $3.50/dozen. Yummy.
Simple get the FDA to approve the Mexican HPAI vaccine they have used since 1995 to make their chickens immune to highly pathogenic avian influenza. Eggs are under 3 bucks in Mexico because their entire commercial flock is immunized against bird flu.
In Death Valley, CA Sunday I saw $6.49/gal for gas noted to be selling for $3.49 in Nevada later that day. Until enough people vote with their feet... Now, admittedly, the egg crisis was created nationally, but a lot of the crazy variation in energy/insurance costs is imposed by stupid state-level policies. In CA the stupid is deep, and I am amazed at both the people who seem to be willing to tolerate it and the significant exodus already in motion.
Egg prices are weird. Near me at trader joes its 3.99 for a dozen organic cage-free eggs. Not bad at all - at a local supermarket it is 10.29 for a dozen store brand but eggland best is 7.99 per dozen. At costco it is 8.29 for two dozen cage-free eggs. It seems to be affecting certain suppliers much more than others. these are all large to extra large size eggs.
And that is great.
I paid $5.49 in Upstate NY today.
After decades of attempts and after much blood, sweat, and tears by my wife in coaching me, I always burn them.
And anyway, the charm of breakfast was primarily in sharing it with her.
I am selling the heck out of eggs, generally get 100 dozen a week.
Heard of a human getting it yet??
Weird that overseas chicken are not getting the avian flu.
FDA and USAID are funding “gain of function” operations to try and make “bird flu” ™ jump to humans. Sound familiar?
Well, with current price of eggs, now certainly isn’t the time to practice! 😁
