Feet of snow across parts of central New York caused more than two dozen homes and businesses to collapse under its weight, according to Oswego County officials.

A lake-effect snowstorm started on Feb. 14 and did not let up until Feb. 19, piling feet of snow on roofs.

According to the National Weather Service’s Buffalo office, the highest weekly totals included 79.1 inches in Palermo and 55.8 inches in Minetto.

On Feb. 19, the city of Oswego had 20 inches of snow on the ground, the highest snow depth so far in February, according to the NWS.

Snow is no longer a thing. I was told 18 years ago by Al Gore that winter would be disappear.

I wonder if FEMA will get a call. And if so, will Elon answer the phone?

Due to global warming, the snow is particularly heavy and no one wants to shovel it off their roofs.

Actually I can see it happening. My cousin who is a widower living in Maine. Had several feet of snow on her roof. She’s 85 so can’t manage it herself. The neighbors came over and shoveled it off her roof. She now hired a company to shovel for her but that first winter without her husband was pretty hard.

And the old man never was the same again

I have an Avalanche roof rake to avoid ice dams but it works like a charm vs. the traditional roof scrapers. If you Google it, the rake works exactly as advertised.

What a complete shock!!! It is winter, it snowed a lot in Buffalo, NY. Yikes! Are we going to all die tonight? Maybe we should slaughter 110,000,000 more chickens as some sort of offering?

Look at the pics and snow amount on buildings in the background. It’s not that much. The roofs that collapsed must have been under-designed or had rotting trusses. What a stupid article. Trying to make crappy roof structures all about snow/weather.

Due to global warming, the snow is particularly heavy and no one wants to shovel it off their roofs.

I grew up in Connecticut. Twenty inches is not that unusual. Same with my old homes of Rockford, Illinois, and Edgerton, Wisconsin. Sometimes you get it twice in a single season. To shovel snow off your roof, you have to get on the roof. Good luck getting the ladder out of the garage or cellar with two feet of snow outside.

Shoveling the walkway and driveway is plenty. If you shovel the roof, the snow has to go somewhere, partly on the driveway and walkway you just shoveled. If there is enough snow that the roof is in danger of collapsing, you best not be on it! Finally the snow acts as extra insulation so that the furnace doesn't have to work as hard. You don't want to call the oil man in this weather!

If you were being sarcastic (due to the global warming crack), my apologies. I didn't pick up on it.

Somebody is going to want a shot at the USAID Slot Machines to try to win 2 billion taxpayer dollars worth of “environmental justice.”

Indeed. Its completely normal for this ara.

This is occurring on the eastern end of Lake Ontario. Because Lake Ontario almost never freezes (it is very deep) the lake effect snow machine lasts all winter season

This area averages something like 300 inches of snow a winter.

I thought there wasn’t supposed to be any more snow after the year 2000.

These places mentioned are actually northwest of Syracuse.
The lake effect is coming off of Ontario.

The area south of Buffalo where I grew up gets its snow off off Lake Erie. Which right now is almost completely frozen over. It is only on average 30 feet deep.

Lake Ontario and the rest of the Great Lakes never completely freeze over. Just the bays or some shore line.
Therefore, the downwind areas can get hammered all winter long. Syracuse(where I attended college) is the snowiest major city in the country.
