Following Canada's 3-2 overtime win over Team USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off championship, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau posted a celebratory message on social media. It was also a clear reference to the rising political tensions between the two countries.
Team USA and Canada added another chapter to their storied rivalry on Thursday night. After playing to a 2-2 tie through 60 minutes, the game went to overtime, and Connor McDavid became a national hero with the game-winning goal.
Shortly after Connor McDavid's shot hit the back of the U.S. net, Trudeau posted about the dramatic victory on X. Trudeau's message was short, but it was a clear response to rhetoric from President Donald Trump.
You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game.
— Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau) February 21, 2025
Since taking office for his second presidential term, Trump has alluded to Canada becoming the 51st state on multiple occasions.
Because of the geopolitical landscape surrounding the game, USA vs. Canada was even more intense than it usually was throughout the 4 Nations Face-Off. Canadian fans in Montreal booed "The Star-Spangled Banner" twice.
In the first meeting between the two teams, there were three fights in the first nine seconds. While there were no fisticuffs in Thursday night's championship, the hockey was intense, and the atmosphere inside TD Garden was spectacular.
The next chance the U.S. will have to unseat Canada as the top hockey country in the world will be at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
With respect to the game, we probably should have won. We had numerous point blank scoring chances. Credit Canada's goalie Binnington with a great game, but McDavid would have scored on some of those imo. I'm thinking of Guentzel's breakaway in particular. McDavid will always put those away. MacKinnon also. Those two scored 3 of the 4 Canada goals in the 2 games.
Of course there was Matthews scoring chance that would have won it in OT, but I wouldn't say he did anything wrong there. It was a spectacular save by Binnington.
The overall talent level was probably deeper on team USA, and one of our best defensemen, Quinn Hughes, never played. But the bottom line is, the US doesn't have the equivalent of McDavid who is on his own rarified level. We don't have a MacKinnon either imo. As I said, they scored 3 of Canada's 4 goals in the two games.
Trump makes ice hockey interesting - Canada should be grateful...
“Trump’s comment about Canada being the 51st state was not a serious one.”
Why would you jump to that conclusion? Nation state boundaries have changed constantly throughout history. Recently look at post-WW II, the breakup of the Soviet Union, and the Balkans.
Uh, governor of canaduh.
If he’s going to wrap himself in a flag, it might as well be Cuban.
You can’t take our country... as he signs over the rights to Canada to the US.
"Unaccaptable views"
This is just one massive fart from the Prince of Canada. Somebody needs to tell the boy that a few days prior to his “big game”, the US physically kicked the asses of three Canadians upon puck drop and then kicked the team’s ass in the game. Sounds a 1-1 record to me.

“Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sends pointed message after Canada beats USA in 4 Nations Face-Off”
When is that A-hole going to resign already?
About as many Stanley Cups a Canadian team has won in the last 20 years or so.
It was Crosby Magic in game one that allowed Canada to be able to participate in the tournament final. Three magical primary assists, including the overtime game winner, in a 4-3 victory. Crosby, who is something like 28-1 in international games he has played in, was limited by an injured elbow that kept him out of his last two NHL games and has him a game time decision for the resumption of NHL games going forward.
half a f.....t
Trump is probably laughing at how the trolling is affecting him.
For us to be a world power in hockey is quite an accomplishment when it’s a sport few Americans participate in and follow as fans.
Canada always seems to come up big against the U.S. in these games. On the international stage their hockey teams have some major intangible qualities — a combination of national pride, a business-like approach to the game, and relentless intensity — that seem to be the deciding factor in so many big games.
I believe the NHL is likely to pass the NBA in attendance and TV ratings in the next 5-10 years.
