As the U.S. approaches the fifth anniversary of the official start of the COVID-19 pandemic, new research finds so many Americans died from the virus that the nation’s Social Security trust fund will see a net increase of hundreds of billions of dollars as a result of retirement benefits that will not be paid out.
The working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research finds that approximately 1.7 million excess deaths among Americans 25 and older occurred between 2020 and 2023 related to the pandemic.
At the same time, some of that gain is offset by the lost tax revenue from those individuals, as well as increased survivor benefits to spouses and children of the deceased, resulting in an estimated $205 billion less in future outlays.
Many of the people who died were seniors older than 65 who were already drawing retirement benefits or would soon, and had paid into the system for many years. While most of the excess deaths were white Americans, Black and Hispanic populations saw the highest excess deaths per capita, as did those with lower educational attainment.
Of course, while excess death is one measure of how COVID continues to impact Social Security, there are other ways that the study notes it does not account for—long COVID survivors, for example, are more likely to drop out of the workforce, which could lead to paying less into Social Security over time and possibly needing to tap the safety net’s disability benefits.

Covid stats have been memory holed. Covid was nasty and killed a bunch of folks for various reasons. From what I remember, Covid was only the fourth or fifth cause of death behind heart attacks, cancer and etc. It was brutal in nursing homes because those folks were at various stages of end of life progressions. Bless their souls, but the decrease in SS payouts for those people is just a rounding error.
Years ago I said our Social Security finances are so far out of wack that the government will either have to inflate the hell out of the money supply or kill off a lot of old people just to make the finances work.
I should have realized they would do both.
I don’t remember the numbers, but I remember seeing the graph. Yes, excess deaths went way up after the shot was released.

I waited nearly 3 hours on wednesday to get a hold of a social security rep. It took about 10 minutes after to find out I have to call a Miss Robinson.
They gave me her number and extension. I will call on Thursday.
They said I was sent an email to contact that person which I remembered but deleted it as Social Security says they never contact you except by mail. I even got an email from them today that said “National Slam the Scam Day” with tips on how to spot a scam.
There was a question on where I was born. I explained where and they said I may end up having to send them a Minnesota birth certificate that has been notarized. I do have a copy and I filled out a form from the Minneapolis office.
I asked them if they already had all the information and she said yes but need to verify.
She also said it takes 100+ days.....
Meanwhile illegals are given an illegal social security number and disability payments and in other articles I have read they are given debit cards with $5,000 per month loaded on them... each month!
I am glad Trump has now ordered this:

He was very fast no nonsense person. The whole time he was sniffling. He said he had allergies.
3/hrs yesterday on hold and today the call was over and done with in less then 5 minutes!
