I posted this in chat.

I am unable to determine which states require not only taking but testing in economics coursework in order to graduate and obtain a high school diploma.

The closest I can get annual survey of the states CES reports.

And it's scary how you require economics.

Thank you, I was going to say the same thing. And as you also imply, it would be true of college too.

If you knew enough to pick a good flight instructor you would already know what you seek to learn. This pattern works for many other things including “economics instructor”. In the case of economics though self study is safer. I picked the right father for that.

High schools are saying we teach too much math now, “most kids will never use it”. Meaning the teachers don’t know it.

A friend majoring in Economics at UT told me he didn’t need Differential Equations. I was shocked.

Thanks for the links!

In KS in the early 70s, high school seniors were required to take one semester of government & a semester of Economics. I don’t know the current standards.

Talking about budgets reminded me of a project I had in 1983.

Two of us working for Honeywell convinced Honeywell, Phoenix, to contribute a classroom of Commodore 64’s to the Adobe Mountain Boy’s Detention Center.

I then held classes for two semesters. I always try to make classes useful. I taught Basic programming, word processing, and spreadsheets.

For Basic, I had them write a procedure to make change. The idea was to minimize the number of coins returned to a customer. This was long before cash registers spit out the change. I told the boys that knowing this would be necessary in order to handle a cash register.

For word processing, the project was to write a letter to a family member. We mailed them.

Spreadsheets were the most interesting. I brought in lots of want ads to the prison. The boys were told to pretend that they were leaving in a month and they had to set up a budget. First, they had to find an apartment. Then they shopped for food. I even let one boy include beer for a Friday night party.

They located entry level jobs at minimum wage. We reduced the take-home pay with the standard deductions. They quickly decided that two bedroom apartments were cheaper.

These classes took a full semester to teach. I came back and taught a second semester. The detention center employees got used to seeing me show up once a week. They would see me at the gate and buzz me in without asking for ID.

You taught them essential life skills. That is empowering. Thank you for doing that.

Read all of Marx’s writings and you have a view of everything about economics what any states that require economics courses have been teaching for the past 60 years...

There are no public/government schools that would allow teaching anything except hatred for capitalism...

While driving in North Dakota I stopped at a country school to look inside.
There were several copies of a book titled
“ Understanding the Federal Budget”

My state had a gov/econ requirement.

In homeschool I taught from selected chapters of ABEKA and the entire uncle Eric series by economist Richard Mayberry.

Sowells BASIC ECONOMICS and his APPLIED ECONOMICS are college level courses that read like books instead of textbooks.

I read them both and came away with lifelong understanding of the way people and governments work.

Got a C-Note sez it ain’t California.

In CA, a high school senior must take a semester of US Government and a semester of economics...

No, CA does not require a student to pass some economics test in order to get the diploma...I think OP wanted to know if any state required students to pass some economics test to get the HS diploma...

We adopted children that spoke English as a separate language. The Florida Virtual School Curriculum was a blessing for my children as the student or parent can contact the teacher by message & phone. You can proceed at your own pace & repeat if you want to work raise lesson score.

Non-academic learning:

1- The students increased their self-esteem thru their earned academic accomplishment.

2- Students assumed responsibility for their own academic education.

My children were able to join the National Honors Society in college.
