Don’t both those ships have local pilots?

What has four bars and a wrecked billion dollar ship? That’s correct Little Joie, a new Lieutenant Commander.
So who ran into who?
“Someone isn’t commanding a ship ever again.”
The moment the ship I was on (USS Mars AFS-1) collided with the USS Cook (FF 1083) our very senior captain said, “GD, that’s it.” He was talking about his career. He was so senior he was allowed to take the ship back to our homeport, but then he was gone. The captain of the Cook, a commander, went away immediately from what we were told, never to be seen again.
The collision was roughly 10 miles north of the canal in the Mediterranean. Cargo ship was leaving the area, so would have already dropped of the canal pilot. Scores of ships in the area either waiting to enter the canal, or exiting.

Yep. I was standing about 50 feet from point of impact on main deck. I had been on the ship about 3 months. I thought we were going to sink.
“On May 14, 1979, USS Cook (DE-1083) and USS Mars (AFS-1) collided off Point Loma, near San Diego, California, in heavy fog while both ships were en route to San Clemente Island.”
