Will Trump have a chilling effect on Hollywood? Insiders say it’s already happening

Eight years ago, Hollywood proudly donned the mantle of anti-Trump resistance.

This time around, the industry’s reaction can best be summed up by the tale of two Trump films.

Just two weeks before President Trump’s inauguration, Amazon Prime Video made a unexpected announcement — the company would release a documentary about Melania Trump, with the first lady serving as an executive producer.

Meanwhile, another Trump-related movie — “The Apprentice” biopic that chronicles the current president’s rise to power decades ago — still has not secured a streaming deal, despite two Oscar nominations for lead actor (Sebastian Stan as Trump) and supporting actor (Jeremy Strong as New York legal pitbull Roy Cohn).

The contrasting fates show the more muted mood in liberal Hollywood. There is a general sense of unease among industry insiders about what’s to come, the speed with which Trump has enacted sweeping executive orders across the federal government — and the seeming buy-in from corporate leaders — and how that all could influence future creative content.

“I don’t think that people have really figured out what to do yet, how to express themselves or what’s going to be the most effective,” said Tom Nunan, co-head of the graduate producers program at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. “It’s hard to be creative when you’re afraid.”

Major Hollywood players were loathe to confront Trump, even before his election. Despite its much-anticipated debut in Cannes last May, “The Apprentice” struggled to lock down a domestic theatrical distributor, particularly after Trump’s then-presidential campaign threatened to file a lawsuit to stop the film.

“There was definitely reticence about getting involved with the movie after our Cannes premiere,” said Amy Baer, one of the film’s producers. “Enough to cool any potential interest we had.”

While some distributors...

Hollywood needs to go back to making good movies, like they did in the 70’s. Stay out of politics, they always look stupid.

But I expect more remakes of classic films like “Goonies” and “Basic Instinct” instead.

They are remaking Goonies.

I'll believe it when I see it. From what I can tell the blue-haired nose-ringers still have a choke hold on the writing rooms, excusing their lack of diversity by "we just want to hire people we're comfortable with." Meaning no conservatives. The result has been and continues to be lousy, uncreative, jargon- and message-laden clunkers of scripts that make the box offices look like Dresden after a bad day.

The only thing that's alarming the money men is the realization that these clowns aren't in it for profit or entertainment - full disclosure, the writing room rads never did hide that sentiment - and the bottom lines are showing it. Identifying the problem isn't solving it, but it's a necessary first step.

Trump isn’t have a chilling effect. Hollywood has been past peak woke for a couple of years now. The streamers that own most of the legacy studios have started to pull back. It’s a slow process because they’ve got so many woke types embedded in the structure; it’s like a termite infested house, and unless you are willing to burn it down and start over — i.e. fire the CEO and most of the Board, which would require a shareholder revolt — it will take time. The chilling effect is from audience rejection of so much of what they have been producing. And on the flip side, the beancounters have taken note of what people will actually turn out to see. The industry is trying to read the room. Trump’s election is another clue, but Trump himself isn’t “chilling” anyone.

A scattering of people in the industry got so far out in left field that they will do some time in purgatory, and some careers may take a hit. But the occasional casualties will be effortlessly replaced as the execs try to reorient to movies and shows that don’t alienate half the country right out of the gate.

The smarter actors (and there are plenty of them) have always had the sense to keep their mouths shut and just do their jobs. In fact, the great majority of them don’t spout politics every time they open their mouths; they do the publicity tours for their movies and stick to message. The leftist idiots get so much attention not because they’re the norm, but because they fit the narrative that the woke media is trying to sell. Some of the dimbulbs are now trying to buy a clue.

Whatever Holllyweird says is not to be believed.

Tinsel Town floats like a daily Brigadoon in miasmas of confabulation and make-believe.

Trump had nothing to do with the chilling effect on Hollywood.

That has all been because of their stupidity, and their belief that we adore Hollywood.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Their movies suck, and the narratives they push are diametrically opposed to what people actually believe in.

We believe that there are only two sexes, and we believe that the likelihood of a creator is far more credible, than life just creating on its own, by happenchance.

We believe in good & evil existing, and we believe good should be promoted & celebrated, while evil should be discouraged & shunned.

When they shared the beliefs of the majority, people supported their endeavors. When they support the minority, they are supported by the minority, and that ultimately reflects upon how they are viewed & received.

In days of old, they were revered, today they are sneered.

The majority may not always be right, but they still carry the true or organic grass-roots mood not the artificially constructed mood that the press is paid to promote.

The Super Bowl responded to Trump by standing ovation - and to the ‘stand in’ for Hollywood Taylor Swift - by booing.

That must give Hollywood a clue...

The human trafficking and various sorts of perversions are getting more and more difficult to cover up; that is what they are afraid of being revealed.

Their crimes will be exposed and the judgment will fall on these impenitent sinners like a ton of bricks.
