At a mosque in the Bronx, African immigrants who had been regulars have stopped attending prayer services. At a church just outside Boston, where most congregants are of Haitian descent, roughly two-thirds of parishioners have vanished. At multiple Baptist congregations in the South, pastors are considering locking church doors once services begin.
Their common fear: That immigration agents will bust in and arrest congregants mid-prayer.
That’s because President Donald Trump recently gave Immigration and Customs Enforcement the go-ahead to conduct raids at houses of worship. That directive is now the target of two major lawsuits, the second of which was filed Tuesday morning. Plaintiffs in the suits include dozens of faith groups, from Pentecostals to Sikhs to Quakers to Jews, who believe the Trump administration is trampling their religious freedom.
This might seem ironic, given that Trump has signed multiple executive orders purporting to “reduce burdens on the free exercise of religion” and protect people of faith. In reality, he and his allies have launched an aggressive assault on religious liberty — or at least, the liberty to practice a religion that isn’t precisely their own.
The offensive began with attacks on specific faith leaders. Trump lashed out at the Right Rev. Mariann Budde, Episcopal bishop of Washington, for having the gall to ask him “to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now.” Rep. Mike Collins (R-Georgia) even demanded that she be deported. (Budde was born in New Jersey, which, to be fair, can sometimes feel like a foreign country.)
Then, Vice President JD Vance accused the Catholic Church, without evidence, of improperly receiving “over $100 million to help resettle illegal immigrants.”

Like the WaPo ever cares about religious liberty.
BINGO!
For most of my lifetime the left has said they don't hate our religion as long as we keep it in our churches on Sundays. Now the left is pretending that what the church does (regarding illegals) can't be a coming and going kind of thing. LOL
As a Catholic, I’m more concerned about Rome shutting down the Latin Mass. I occasionally attend one at a nearby parish: it’s packed, it’s vibrant, with many young married families. Why they want to shut it down I simply don’t understand.
Yet they say nothing about how the government is interfering with the Church.
Illegal immigrants != religious freedom
The conflation is tiresome.
Yet another recipient of USAID money cooks up a laugher.
It’s not an assault on religious liberty. It is an assault on any organization that flouts US Law to hide illegal immigrants.
Trump would be overjoyed to have illegal immigrants worship in any church of their choice in countries they are citizens of.
Which is part of their agenda to make Americans slaves to a Marxist dictatorship.
That’s because President Donald Trump recently gave Immigration and Customs Enforcement the go-ahead to conduct raids at houses of worship. …Since when are houses of worship immune from legitimate law enforcement?!?
Yet the Washington Post would strenuously deny that Clinton and his administration were infringing on the rights of the Branch Davidians they burned to death in the 90’s. Spare me the hypocrisy, WP. If a thief runs into a church and the church is lawless enough to give them sanctuary, that makes them lawbreakers and accomplices. It is a defense to all society - including religious adherents of all stripes - to apprehend the lawbreakers and prevent them from continuing to transgress the real rights of the victims. Same logic applies to illegal aliens.
Wow, the Left is getting desperate in its efforts to maintain the status quo.
And the sooner the better.
My thoughts exactly.
“without evidence, of improperly receiving “over $100 million to help resettle illegal immigrants.””
YAY. I thought we weren’t going to hear “without evidence” ever again.
Catholic Charities “services” has received BILLIONS.
Boo hoo, criminals are scared they are going to get caught...as they should be.
2 solutions, turn yourself in and ask to be sent home.
OR go home yourself on your own.
President Trump is not stopping the illegal aliens from attending a mosque back home in Haiti
The total dishonesty of the WP and it’s writers like Catherine Rampell knows no bounds. Their credibility as news purveyors is already in the trash but they just can’t stop with the leftist propaganda either by commission or ommission
Rounding up illegal aliens is not an assault on religion.
