In 1979, Jimmy Carter created the Department of Education. Since then, the United States has gone from 1st to 17th in Education.

I can’t think of a single thing Politician Jimma Carter did not screw up.
I’m surprised he wasn’t lost at sea when in the navy.
Real hard to find somebody gone overboard in rough water.

It seems bizarre, that the state of public education has deteriorated, since Jimmy Carter created the Department of Education.

A cabinet level federal department, was created to oversee a major area of public policy. It might be expected that such a department of government, would improve the status of the area of life which that department was set up to deal with.

Yet it appears the opposite has happened. How strange.

The US Department of Education is wasteful and unnecessary. It’s got to go. But I don’t think it has a whole lot to do with the decline in test scores.

I taught for a few years at a private school. Administrators there ran a tight ship. Student misconduct was simply not tolerated. So I could teach without interruption. And yes, test scores there were high.

Then for financial reasons, I moved on to a city public high school. It was often difficult to get full lessons in because student misconduct was tolerated. I had to be a cop as much as a teacher.

Why was student misconduct tolerated there? It was because the school board and the state set lax standards. Education did not come first. Student “rights” came first.

The US Department of Education had little to do with that.

Yes, but we lead the world in mentally ill boys and sexual predators in girls’ locker rooms and showers, and playing on girls’ athletic teams. This was forced into the public school systems via a “Dear Colleague” letter from the Department of Education.

Priorities, people, priorities.

If you think about it, the U.S. put a man on the moon without needing a Federal "Department of Education".

Also air travel, automobiles, computers, polio vaccine, nuclear weapons, etc.

I’m just interested since you have worked at both public and private schools. How do you feel about school choice where local governments will give students vouchers to attend private schools. As you stated public schools do not discipline students. Do you feel this could infiltrate and bring down standards at private schools? Will private schools be forced to accept as full payment what ever the voucher is while students already enrolled will have to pay full price? I have seen disastrous results in private school where this has happened.

Department of REeducation. Teaching communism, socialism, racism, perversion, everything BUT the three Rs: Reading Riting and Rithmatic.
As a rule of thumb you can be sure that if the U.S. government created in the last 60 years it wasn't for 'The Good of The People'.

“17th in Education”

Its really 17th now ... I thought is was 40th.

Like the USAID the Dept. of Education is probably just another Government cash register for Democratic donors or another way of seizing power as in Teachers’ Unions who seem to do everything possible to make sure our kids’ education puts them in last place in world competition.

Stop blaming the schools, the teachers and the Department of Education.

The fault is mainly with the students and their households.

Put a federal tax on cell phone service of 10 cents a minute from 9:15pm to 5am, to be prepaid.

Put a federal tax of cable service of $5/day on residential cable and Internet service that functions at any time from 9pm to 5am starting from 9pm on the fourth Sunday of August to the fourth Saturday of June, to be prepaid.

If the kids get a good night’s sleep, they’ll learn better.
