Unknown are CP/M, TRSDOS, Altos, PC DOS, DR-DOS, UNIX, XENIX, Amiga OS, QDOS and a few others I used in the 780s and 80s.
There is another factor dayglored. When you get dried out please see #20.
Thanks, yeah it’s a mess. The good news is that it wasn’t the bathroom (toilet) pump, it was “only” the gray-water pump, so although there was water all over the floor, it didn’t have poo in it. (If it had, I wouldn’t be posting to FR yet, LOL.)
I've got a big fan running to evaporate the water. I'd use the ShopVac, but the house can use the boost in humidity this time of year.
Yeah, it's impossible to get a handle on OSes that don't require registration, and that don't have restrictive mechanisms on file (download) distribution. If they wanted a comprehensive survey they might try to include the kind of data that NETCRAFT.COM gathers about worldwide websites and the operating systems they run.
But no. These "operating system" surveys are interesting for desktop and mobile devices, but historically they've only been fantasy tales to make Windows (and more recently Google) Marketing personnel feel good.
Not that there's anything wrong with that. :-)
They missed the 3 XP PCs I’m using. I keep them running to use 2+ decade old AutoCad software that will only run on XP. These are virus free since they’re never connected to the internet. The only problem has been the time, or 2 that I experienced a hardware failure. It has become difficult to reinstall XP since Microsoft no longer activates it. It has become slightly difficult to do that. All of the software has been legally purchased, and the seller can’t legally change the terms of the sales agreement once it’s sold.
I think they mostly use the internet. The browser shows your OS to websites via User Agent. Tracking downloads wouldn’t be accurate at all for Linux users because we’ve all tried several versions in the same time frame that a Windows user sticks to one version.
Use Agent can also be spoofed. There are browser extensions/addons to do it. Statistics services buy the info from large websites and of course google.
“Yeah, it’s impossible to get a handle on OSes that don’t require registration, and that don’t have restrictive mechanisms on file (download) distribution.”
Yep, absolutely. Thank you. Because it is a very important factor that is not being taken into consideration. It changes the whole picture.
Hey, where is my OS/2 warp? /sarc
“I think they mostly use the internet. The browser shows your OS to websites via User Agent.”
That would let the cat out of the bag. How would these websites be able to accurately count individual unique devices aside from just general OS type? OS yes, number of unique devices for sure? They are not supposed to have that intrusive capability right?
But even with webserver stats it could not be very accurate. Not everyone goes to the same sites... And not all sites contribute that data or participate in the survey. If they are getting numbers from Google they are not going to be accurate for Linux either. Most Linux users are intelligent enough to avoid Google and use script blockers that block Goggle services on sites.
Steve Wozniak liked Windows Phone OS...
I still have an original Windows DOPOD stylus pen phone from 2006 bought in HK. Pretty cool. Lots of extra batteties.
A lot of stuff on the internet is connected to Bluetooth and could be similar to home electronics like Arduino. They are rolling out the replacement for Bluetooth.
“Unknown are CP/M, TRSDOS, Altos, PC DOS, DR-DOS, UNIX, XENIX, Amiga OS, QDOS and a few others I used in the 780s and 80s.”
Except for UNIX I’m trying to figure out who would still be using these obsolete 32 bit systems or know how? Or even why? Let alone to the tune of five times more than Linux? lol
I’m real sure the “unknown” numbers are not at all accurate... :)
Amiga OS up to Amiga OS 4.1. Has lively, albeit, very small ,following and developers.
Security through obscurity.

This SAAS — https://statcounter.com/ — strictly uses websites/browsers for all of it’s stats. Since the SAAS works by website owners placing a bit of code on their page, statcounter scrapes the data from all their SAAS customers and combines it to put out their overall stats like the OP OS usage subject.
As far as IDing individuals, they use cookies. If you clear your cookies and visit again, you’ll get counted twice. Think of it like polling. They’re using stats from a small percent of WWW users. Is it 100% accurate? No, just like polling isn’t.
A good reason to see if there is Linux alternative. Less susceptible to intrusive forced updates. Could probably work on decent quality hardware for 10-20 years. An actual PERSONAL computer.
IMHO. I am sure someone out there knows the full scoop.
“Since the SAAS works by website owners placing a bit of code on their page.”
Yep, I understand. But how many domains actually do that and contribute? 25%? Pretty hard to take polling from 25% and determine a guess what the true 100% would be. I think in all this they are just Guesstimating the numbers of Linux users. There is still a whole lot of room for error. Like I mentioned earlier, The numbers I see here are the same numbers I remember seeing 15 years ago. There is no way they could still be running along those same low percentages now. Linux has been exploding because of the recent MS issues.
I still have a copy of the original text game, Adventure, on punch cards. XYZZY, Plover, Plugh, Fee Fie Foe Foo!
Ain’t it the truth.... :-)
