The Garden Thread - February, 2025
February 1, 2025 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 02/01/2025 6:55:11 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

Oh my! That girl is a hoot!

One of my neighbors loves the PW cookbook and all her stuff. I might ask to borrow her cookbook for a few days.

I do hope you get all of your energy back soon! I hate feeling depleted.

Right now I am doing research for my sisters. They want to take a beach vacation again. We all get along famously…for about 3 days. Then it starts to get too close for comfort.

There are lots of requests. A pool, white sand, gulf front, not too high, beach service if at all possible. Keep the rest affordable. One sister loves to be near boutique shopping, and I can’t handle that. Just park me on the beach, and I’m good.

I’ll put forth a few ideas on what I’ve found, but I’m just beginning my search, and we’ll see how things go. I’m not much into crowds, so will be looking at a Fall getaway. Late October seems to be a possibility for the 6 of us (3 sisters plus hubbies).

We are supposed to get more snow tonight, maybe another inch. Not sure how much, but yes, wind chills to -15. Brrr!

I have heard a lot of good things about Orange Beach and know two who have vacationed there. Lots of rentals and they looked reasonable.

Thanks, do you know the names of the places they went to? One sister, after asking me to look in that area, now says she wants me to look east of Destin. This is why I don’t like doing this. I try hard to please everyone. They don’t do the work, but then they complain. I’m only one day in and already regretting this.

My mom’s family used to do family reunions & in their heyday, they alternated between the US & Germany. The last couple have been in the US. It’s getting harder & harder to find someone to ‘host’ which entails finding accommodations, a place big enough to meet, arrange food for the group when they eat together, have some extracurricular activities nearby, etc. LOTS of organizing.

It appears someone in the family who lives in SC is talking about hosting a reunion there & some ‘survey’ emails have finally gone out (would you attend, how many, etc.). So far, they have been ‘all talk, no action’ for the last 2 years.

When we moved here, mom wanted to have a large family group get-together and we did talk rather extensively about what it would involve. With the SC plans ‘popping up’ yet again, I told her to wait & see if they do plan something - if she mentions doing something here, SC will get dropped like a hot potato!

If we put up a big tent in the yard & got outdoor ‘facilities’, we could do some things at the house & I am sure the church would loan or rent us their fellowship hall. Being a tourist destination, there are plenty of hotels & B&Bs, cabins, etc. What makes our area a tourist destination would also give folks things to do - in past reunions, we would meet in the morning & folks had the afternoons free.

At the moment, after the last year of being on the road moving, driving to SC is the last thing I want to do - would love to stay here, but hosting a reunion would be a ton of work & I know who would end up with the brunt of it (guess who!).

Good luck with your vacation plans!

February in SE Texas is the worst month. Freezing cold and rain. But when March gets here, the winter switch goes off.
First week of March is planting time.
Tomatoes and Peppers are the best crops down here.

Ahhh, family reunions! Fun for those visiting! Not as much fun for those hosting the reunion. It is a LOT of work!

I think I am still not forgiven for the last family reunion that was planned in 2005 or 2006, which we didn’t attend but helped plan as best as we could from far away. (We had already accepted a wedding invitation for a family friend that conflicted, and my family KNEW this when they picked the same date, anyway.) I had thought since we had told them of our conflict, when they decided to use to same date, that our absence would be forgiven. It was not, by one person in particular.

Every now and again, I am still reminded of that time. Sometimes you try, and it’s still not good enough.

Sorry it was years ago now, one guy who stopped at my barn sale and told me a lot about it, that got me looking myself. An old friend who lives in OK now went there with friends and said it was great and reasonable but I don’t think she has a name. A couple of years ago now I went to google and typed in orange beach florida vacation rentals. Also saw some really nice ones on VRBO. Unfortunately many are two story on stilts and stairs are an issue.

Yeah I have tried cheating old man winter. Planted in late January then got a freeze and it killed everything.
I am seeing Orioles and Cardinals even though we are in freezing temps. That is a sign that we are in our last cold snap.

No worries. The goalposts have already been moved. I mean the search area has been moved. Now we’re looking to Ft. Walton Beach (where we usually go) and east towards Seaside and Rosemary, where she *thinks* she wants to go. This is how it is when I deal with my older sister. She often has demands that are nearly impossible to fill, so we get the next best thing, and she’ll complain because XYZ didn’t match. Or just X, or just Y, or just Z. It’s always something.

I’m actually having anxiety about this now.. The sad thing is…the trip hasn’t even been planned.

People sometimes say the best part of a vacation is in the planning, because of high expectations. Sadly, that isn’t my experience with my older sister. Not anymore.

But…she is my sister, and I know I’m not perfect either. I still love her no matter how much she twists me around in pretzels. I just try to not let it happen more than once a year.

We have Cardinals year round in Indiana, but the Orioles come in May.

I wish that we were in our last cold snap. That won’t happen until late April, early May around here.

“This is how it is when I deal with my older sister.”

Hey! I’M the OLDER SISTER in MY family! There will be NO dissension in the ranks, LOL!

My advice? Giver her TWO options. Let HER decide the outcome/locale (that you, yourself have ALREADY decided!) and make her THINK it was HER idea to begin with and all will be well. ;)

It’s really not THAT HARD to deal with The Older Sister. ;)

LOL. How much older are you than your sister?

Mine is 7 years older and think she’s 8, but she can’t do basic math in her head.

I will go wherever she *thinks* she wants us to go, but I think I am finally moving past her drama queen tantrums, and will rent a completely different unit this time around.

That way, when she wants to pout for 5 days and hide in her room, she won’t be around to greet me with a grunted ,”Ughhh!” in the morning when I see her first thing and say “good morning” to her.

I will take your advice under consideration, and see if I can make it work. Lord, knows, I’ve tried everything.

Truly, I think I’m her trigger for behaving badly.

The RB Grosbeak! Yes! I love when they show up here! It means hummingbirds are right around the corner!

I love the Juncos in the winter, but I miss my Spring and Summer birds.

For some reason, Blue Jays have kind of taken over the feeding station and I think they’re scaring away the smaller birds I normally have, though the Juncos and Nuthatches ignore them, LOL! Plenty of Cardinals, so that’s good.

I have had ONE Goldfinch the entire winter, which is very odd. My cats don’t go out in the daytime this time of year - or ever, really, so they’re not on the hunt.

I saw a Grackle the other day which is WAY ahead of schedule. They usually show up with the Red Winged Blackbirds in April at the earliest.

Well thanks in advance for indulging this slide. But I am enjoying them as it is winter and can't do much in the garden yet. This has been my winter project. Started in 2007 and completed to a point in 2012, 1881 yoyos that started as a coverlet. YoYo coverlets are beautiful and this was made in honor of my Mom who loved yoyos and I inherited that and have made many other things with them. The coverlet pretty much sat in a plastic bin for 9 years. It was just too fragile for every day wear. I did enter it in a quilt show in the nearest big city one year. And it went on display at a heritage village festival in one of the old houses two years ago. That's when I decided it needed a backing. Over the next year or so I found a backing sheet and then a few months later a bottom sheet at our local thrift store. They were 2.00 and 3.00 each. I got a package of thin quilt batting and there it sat until this late fall. Through a lot of work and encouragement froj our Diana I finished it yesterday. All the yoyos were anchored to the light colored sheet with army thread, row by tedious row. After that I laid everything out, bottom sheet, batting and top sheet. Wrapped and pinned the bottom sheet around to make a binding. Now I can move on to a bunch of smaller projects I hope to finish by spring. 0-02-01-f69a616d560b957a6ccfc582c44a5b4212f62f0862f29dbff120d62a4d6acf5c-e3086a1a866dbee2 0-02-01-36b721f32034c30550c96b6474bf95ecd789b0ceb12c9ea6fcc0f93f91055f88-c2cedce3057a86ea

If you are unfamiliar with yoyos they are made out of a circle of fabric, usually 3" in diameter. They became very popular in the 30's and 40's. Mom made dresser scarves, dolls, many things out of them. I have too including a really nice lined purse with purchased floral fabric. 0-02-01-1f7269c6cb0ef136b7739be38b63446b7244e9f0d26ea8179fdbf6fdc58eab17-5ac9532830e66eb2

It’s BEAUTIFUL!!!

I love homemade quilts, though I don’t have any, and have never made one. I definitely admire them. All my quilts are manufactured ones.

Mom had started one, gave up, and then my little sister finished it about a year ago. She was around Mom the most, so it is right that she has that precious piece.

Actually, now that I think about it, I bought an unfinished quilt from a thrift store. It’s very colorful. I’ll have to go find it, and maybe yours will inspire me to start working on it.
