Trump administration tests the power to email every federal employee at once
NBC News ^ | Jan. 24, 2025 | Garrett Haake and Ryan J. Reilly

The new feature, announced by the Office of Personnel Management, aligns with the goals of DOGE.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s administration is testing a new capability that would allow officials to email the entire federal government workforce from a single email address, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) said in a statement Friday.

The new capability could allow Trump to communicate directly with millions of federal workers across dozens of agencies simultaneously, with a single click of a mouse.

The White House declined to comment.

The effort aligns with the government modernization goals of the new Department of Government Efficiency, headed by tech billionaire Elon Musk, and could take advantage of his team’s engineering experience as they seek to wring savings and efficiencies from government systems.

This is called an e-mail group. Add all users to the correctly named group, and boom. There you go. You also probably want to set controls on who can post to it. Lest you send out a message and get back 100,000 “PLEASE REMOVE ME FROM THIS LIST!” responses to all. And you don’t want that.

[No show up for work no get money ,LOL]

Periodically send out a mass email. Anyone not on authorized leave that does not respond in 30 minutes is terminated.

Only someone who has been on the receiving end of an ALL message knows the horror that entails. And the unending series of joke replies that ensues.

The worst one I experienced was when a corporate announcement came out about a new acquisition in one of our subsidies, and the head of HR for that division asked if sub head was ready to terminate the operations head. Reply all. Ouch.

It’s going to be tested soon. We were provided the originating email address that will be used for the broadcasts.

Yes, when I used to fax someone a pack of black construction paper.

In the early years of DHS some idiot in DC accidently sent an email to the entire agency. It was just a regular junk email for a DC office.

Employees across the country ticked off by the junk mail starting responding with “Take me off your email list”. All of those replies also were sent to all DHS employees.

In a cascading act of idiocy more and more employees demanded to be off the email list. These reply emails also went to every employee.

Before long everyone’s in box had thousands and thousands of garbage messages.

It may have been the first ever self-inflicted denial of service attack in US history.

DOGE should write the first email describing how one agency is being cut by 75%. Send.

One click, yes. All at once? No. They generally throttle them at the server level and send in batches of a few thousand.

They tested it last week. We were warned it was coming so we wouldn’t report it as spam. I like the direct communication without the agency filtering what he says.

The messages come to our government email, so we would be on the clock when read them.

Unless we peek at our phones during off duty time, which is on us.

When we have a weather crisis is my part of Florida, the county or city calls with a recorded message. And an Amber Alert rings on all cell phones when necessary. Sending an email to a few hundred thousand workers strikes me as an easy thing to do. Ask the company that sends out emails to see if I want to buy new sheets...

This could get interesting. A lot can be interpreted by the handling of an email.

Why wasn’t this already in place ?

Even if the E-Mails are different departments it should be simple to do like this.

FirstName.LastName.Department@usgov.gov (I am guessing this is how it is right now.)

use.less.*@usgov.gov

or better yet:

*.*.*@usgov.gov

And NO HYPHENATED CRAP on last names ! If you’re Married then use your new last name.

I did a "reply all" one time when I was working in a City Water Department. What I wanted to do was only reply to the entire City Water Department, unfortunately I replied to the ENTIRE City including the Mayor and the Highly Ridicules Department.

The original E-Mail was from the Mayor and was about some mudslime PC crap about terrorscum comments as to not offend anyone of the religion of pieces and hurting feelings.

My reply was not in favor of the whole thing.

I was called to My Supervisors Office within about 10 minutes of hitting the Send button...

I did get to keep My Job.

I worked for one of the Fortune Five companies in the ‘90s. They owned other major companies. I could’ve sent an email to all of them at once if I’d wanted to. Many thousands of people. Some news anchors were on the contact list, as well as other familiar names. (I had an email war going on between myself and a big lib hotshot reporter.)

It seems it should be more than easy for the administration.
