BREAKING: Is ‘Republican’ Thom Tillis Trying to Tank Hegseth's Nomination?
PJ Media ^ | January 24, 2025 | Matt Margolis

Pete Hegseth’s nomination for secretary of Defense has reportedly hit a new snag.

This confirmation was always destined to face fierce resistance, with Democrats offering unrelenting opposition and the media happily running interference with their smear machine. As we previously reported, Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) have already announced their opposition to Hegseth’s confirmation, but a third Republican U.S. senator is allegedly joining them. ... Hegseth previously managed to advance from the Armed Services Committee by the narrowest margin, a 14-13 party-line vote. On the Senate floor, cloture was invoked at 51-49, barely avoiding a situation where Vice President JD Vance would’ve had to cast the deciding vote.

With 53 Republican senators in total, when it was just Murkowski and Collins voting “no,” that would bring the number to 51 votes to confirm—assuming no Democrats cross party lines and vote for Hegseth. That leaves Hegseth with room for only one more GOP defection. So, if Tillis is a “no,” then the vote would be 50-50, leaving Vice President JD Vance to cast the deciding vote.

Tillis is such a chair warmer. Does he keep getting in due to open primaries?

I think there will be 4 republican no votes. The usual two gal rinos, Tillis, and McConnell. The rinos want to let Trump know that they are the ones in charge of the agenda.

His vote is most certainly for sale.

But in Washington, the currency is more often power than cash.

Just wonder what he wants..,

You were right. He went around saying Trump should have his cabinet, but then, he’s a democrat so he lies.

Tillis voted Aye without any fanfare and apparently his vote was never really in doubt.

I didn’t really believe this rumor - McConnell wanted to vote “No” without affecting the outcome and Tillis voting “No” would have ruined that. McConnell wanted to “make a statement” with his vote - getting a bit petty in the twilight of his career...but he would not have wanted to embarrass Thune as mbrfl noted, so if Tillis truly was a “No” I doubt he would have done it. He did vote in favor of allowing the nomination to come up for a vote (cloture) so he was at least consistent that all nominees should be given an up or down vote (the reason he went for the nuclear option on these nominees during the first Trump presidency).

The only one of those Senators who vote “No” that was entirely sincere in their reasons was probably Collins - the “authentic RINO” who has never claimed to be a conservative. Murkowski voted No just because she can now that she doesn’t have to worry about party primaries in Alaska. She is essentially running on a nonpartisan ballot.

But ultimately, no matter. A nominee is just as confirmed if the vote is 51-50 as it is 100-0. V for Victory. And I guess for us political junkies it was a bit more exciting to get to see VP Vance come onto the floor to cast the winning vote.

Yeah...Oh well, doesn’t matter. As long as you get the most votes in the end the nominee is still confirmed. V for Victory.
