President-elect Donald J. Trump is considering an executive order to allow TikTok to continue operating despite a pending legal ban until new owners are found, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.
The possible executive order, reported earlier by The Washington Post, is under discussion as TikTok faces a deadline on Sunday to be banned in the United States unless it finds a new owner. The popular video-sharing app is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company. Republicans have said for years that they see the app, which has been downloaded to millions of smartphones, as a national security risk. It has become a rare issue that has united both parties in Congress.
If the Supreme Court upholds the law, which will ban the app unless ByteDance sells it to a non-Chinese company, special treatment from Mr. Trump might be the only way for TikTok to continue operating in the United States in the near term. The law requires app store operators like Apple and Google and cloud computing providers to stop distributing TikTok in the United States.
An executive order could try to direct the government not to enforce the law or to delay enforcement to complete a deal, a move that past presidents have used to challenge laws. It is unclear if an executive order would survive legal challenges or persuade the app stores and cloud computing companies to take steps that could expose them to huge penalties.
Alan Z. Rozenshtein, a former national security adviser to the Justice Department and a professor at the University of Minnesota Law School, said an executive order should be “taken with a medium-sized boulder of salt.” Such an order is not a law, he...

The NYT is back to the anonymous sources already.
The TikTok ban will be perverted to be uses as a precedent for banning conservative sites, just like the Patriot Act was perverted to use against conservative "domestic terrorists."
well, it would put the dems in the sticky situation of having to challenge it legally (which, of course they will feel compelled to do out of pure reflex because orange man bad) and get every millennial and Genz person hating them. So there’s that.
I hate TikTok and want it banned, unless it is sold and drastically changes its policies!
No blanket ban on other sites!
Good luck with that.
It is the NYTs. Not a reliable source about anything to do with President Trump.
Whac-A-Mole anyone?
This is crap if Trump does this. Regardless of whether he agrees with the law, it is a valid law passed by Congress and it is his job as President to ensure that the laws are faithfully executed. That constitutional requirement is not limited to the laws with which he agrees.
I strongly support donald Trump’s position on TikTok.
Whatever that may be.
Originally he was for banning it. Now he’s not.
Wasn’t it Trump who started this mess?
The Republicans will be blamed and annihilated if the TikTok ban takes effect. A huge portion of Americans want it and many of them vote. This isn’t complicated.
Didn’t the scrotum say CAN ban PRCtok?
I have no idea what that deranged gibberish means.
Exactly. That's why we should not agree to the government passing the bill in the first place.
But now it's the law of the land. Eventually, the government is going to have to realize it's a bad law.
Now TikTokers are downloading RedNote, an app that's owned by a Chinese Company.
So the next move is for the government is to ban RedNote.
The Congress is going to have to realize that it is going to make them look draconian.
So they may be under pressure to repeal the law.
Whac-a-Mole anyone?
Trump's against the TikBon ban and apparently anyone who's MAGA like Matt Gaetz voted against the bill.
But we know that 90% of the GOP is backed by the Deep State.
It'll make our elected officials look like fools.
Well wake up and understand that the scotus did not say PRCtok WILL be banned it said it CAN be banned by CONgress!
