The 62-year-old reportedly crashed into a stationary skier, a British man, on the Aiguille Rouge mountain in Les Arcs on Tuesday.
She died shortly afterwards, after experiencing traumatic shock, according to French news outlet Le Dauphine.
The man broke his leg in the collision.
The director of slope safety at the resort, Phillipe Janin, told the AFP news agency it had happened around 10:30 (09:30 GMT), when the woman was descending a "well-groomed" black run on the Aiguille Rouge mountain.
Black runs are extremely difficult slopes that are considered to be only suitable for expert skiers.
Mr Janin said the 62-year-old had lost control of her skis before colliding with a 35-year-old man who was stationary on the piste. Emergency services attended the scene, but she died shortly afterwards.
He added that he believed both of the skiers had been wearing helmets, and the man had been rushed to hospital with a broken leg.
According to the Domaines Skiables de France, the association that represents ski area operators in France, an average of 10 traumatic deaths are recorded each year on French slopes.
Up to half of these, it adds, are a result of a collision with an obstacle or another skier.

If some woman ran into me on the slope, I would be piste.
Why is this news. This happens all the time. We used to put them in the welding bay under a tarp until the medical examiner could release the to the funeral director. Snowsports are great hobbies, but there are risks. as a sign in the rescue building used to warn “Caution snow may be slippery”. I politely told my wife she was done with skiing about 5 years ago. Were old, to risky. I was a lifelong skier and in that time had 2 near fatal wrecks.
Human bones can handle a few feet per second, after that it gets dicey.
Yes, unfortunately, it does.
A twelve year old boy died at Cranmore Mountain in North Conway, NH over the holidays. He went off the trail and into a tree.
I guess maybe I should have posted this in chat.
BIL is over 60. He busted his nose, got a concussion and spent a few days in the hospital after a skiing accident. He couldn’t drive for 3 months.
Bingo. I’m a 64 yr old woman and you need to be aware of your limitations. I was mudding and painting one of my rentals and I put my back out really badly. Now I have put my back out before (I have mild scoliosis) but this time the doc said it will take 2 weeks to heal.
Did it happen from stretching or falling?
neither. Bending over to move a paint can. We buy paint in 5 gallon buckets. I should have known better. Ketorolac is great by the way.
Thinking the same thing and running into another human being on a Black Diamond is some expert level stuff since there are so few people on those runs.
I gave myself two cracked ribs and a concussion on a black diamond years ago.
Pro tip: Always wear a helmet.
Right?
They even speak in metrics.
And then they like to switch syllables, like “Cimer” instead of “Merci”.
There is absolutely no an older person (I am one) can’t have just as much fun on a green or blue slopes slope as a black one. My wife broke her arm just by sitting down in the snow when her arm and pole were caught behind her back. Compound fracture that had to be reset at the mountain base. Copperhead in CO. And her grandmother’s wedding ring got “lost” by the staff their. Wife was about 58 at the time.
Physics.
Women are not men.
Pluswhich, I never go down a black diamond run unless it is essentially clear of all people. Falling on that steep of a slope at a high rate of speed is dangerous enough all by yourself.
On my favorite run, there is a sign posted that essentially says, “Hey, if you fall, you know you’re going to have a very long slide before you stop. Right?”
‘I can understand from a tree collision, like Sonny Bono.”
Sonny Bono hit a tranny. It identified as a tree.
We have no time for recreation as we are “semi retired” aka busier than ever with DH’s hvac biz and our rentals. I’m probably going to be giving my ice skates away to daughter in law. I just bought the granddaughter her first pair of Jackson skates and she will be taking lessons. She’s almost 4.
It's not the sliding that kills you. It's the sudden stopping.
Regards,
it has nothing to do with age, it has everything to do with skill. when i was 78 i was skiing double blacks and most of my friends were too.
Saw that the other day at Crystal. Lady fell, slid about 100 yards, glanced into a tree, and came to a stop on a mogul. Took her 10 minutes to get up, brushed off, back on her skis and away.
I’ve skied such runs at that age never fell never anyone or anything edges must be sharp
