The ridge high above Los Angeles is filled with clues. There are shattered pieces of electrical equipment, and a grove of madrone blackened by fire. Police tape is strung around one section of the sandy soil, now mixed with ash.
Investigators have zeroed in on these rocky bluffs with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean as the ignition point of the Palisades fire, the inferno that has destroyed at least 5,000 homes and businesses and killed at least eight people.
A recent visit by New York Times reporters to the site — near the “crime scene,” as officers for the Los Angeles Police Department who were posted nearby described it — suggested a range of possibilities, some of them contradictory, for the origin of the fire.
Charred wooden utility poles litter the ground. One plot of scorched chaparral is from a previous fire that firefighters thought they had extinguished on New Year’s Day, nearly a week before the Palisades fire broke out. And there is evidence of recent visitors to the area around Skull Rock, the eerily shaped boulder that draws hikers and teenage partyers whose discarded beer bottles remain in a heap of shattered glass.
For now, the answer to what caused one of Los Angeles’ most destructive firestorms may be elusive even to the investigators. The yellow crime scene tape fluttering in the wind near Skull Rock is hundreds of yards across a steep slope from the zone where a New York Times analysis of satellite images and witness photographs suggests the ignition point may have been.
The area is desolate today. The slopes of sand and rock are colorless and moon-like, as if the fire had incinerated every trace of chlorophyll. It’s a far cry from before the fire, when hiking trails in the area were framed...

AKA- even if the evidence points to arson, the NYSlimes will deny it...
Poorly written piece of fluff.
It took FIVE NY Times fabulists...
LADWP, not PG&E. PG&E doesn’t go south of the Kern County / Ventura County line (except for the northwestern 2/3 of Santa Barbara County).
Cleared the path for their bullet train.
It reads like a bad high school “creative writing” class report . And it took 5 sophomores to write it!
The fire could have started in thousands of places and everyone knew there was a real danger the fire would spread quickly because the land around LA is a tinder box waiting for a favorable wind to turn a small fire into a huge, out-of-control fire.
The REAL cause of the fire's SPREAD and property/land the size of Manhattan island being burned to the ground is the INCOMPETENCE and CORRUPTION of the Los Angeles and California governments. It's that simple!
They utterly failed to make sure the right people and fire safety reservoirs and equipment were in place to PREVENT a huge Los Angeles fire -- when everyone in the area knew that was a key danger and real possibility.
The deceit of the New York Times is that its journalists and editors are either too stupid — or too corrupt — to find a single coconut on Coconut Island.
Newsom and Bass Made Many Major Errors
Evidence of gross mismanagement and incompetence
by Newsom and Bass has grown overwhelming.
<><>On Jan 2nd, eight days ago, the Ntl Weather Service urgently warned of extreme fire conditions.
<><>To drive it home, the LA office held a press briefing warning of impending catastrophe.
<><>Newsom and Bass should have called out the National Guard.
<><>They should have had planes and helicopters spotting fires, dousing them immediately.
<><>They should have issued emergency warnings to residents.
<><>they should have used various methods to spray water,
<><>they should have had mobile sprinkler units alongside normal firefighter hoses,
<><>they should have wet down vulnerable areas.
Instead, the following day, Karen Bass flew to Ghana
on a frivolous tax-paid junket mooching off taxpayers .
<><>Gavin Newsom could not care less
<><>this joker only called out the Ntl Guard a shocking seven days later.
It all started because we b*stards emit too much CO2.
The ‘crime scene’ originated in the governor’s office
\\
ahhh.
wonder if these are some of the 100 year old wooden poles that the utility was TRYING to replace with metal wind and fire proof poles .....
...but were prevented from that ......
by an amateur biologist who found an “endangered” plant and hooked up with an econazi org and sued to stop the project.
Every year Costa Rica has a fire season. The main source of the fires is broken glass from bottles. The shards can magnify the sunlight and ignite the dry brush.
The fires are allowed to burn and eventually extinguish themselves from lack of fuel.
The Costa Rican government doesn’t give a crap if some useless plant is destroyed.
EC
**as if the fire had incinerated every trace of chlorophyll.**
I remember sixty years ago when after a fire the state would send in helicopters to spread weed and grass seeds before the rains came and mud slides began.
RE: PLANES & HELOS with water to drop:
BIDEN FLEW INTO LAX TO
DEDICATE A COUPLE OF NUTTY “MONUMENTS”......
A TOTAL NO FLY ZONE gets put into place when AIR FORCE ONE is nearby.
ALL THOSE WATER DROPPING UNITS WERE GROUNDED ——BY BIDEN
I NEED A STRONGER WORD THAN INCOMPETENCE
Total idiocy?
As we both know, that's exactly what happens when you allow flammable biomass to accumulate to epically catastrophic proportions.
The very earth is sterilized of all living organisms.
Nice summary, Liz.
“Gavin Newsom — this joker only called out the Ntl Guard a shocking SEVEN days later after the fire was out of control!”
The irony, Liz, is that our most populous state is dead broke after lavishing their homeless and illegal immigrants with all kinds of funding. Only when a REAL emergency happens, do they worry about spending.
‘Course, there’s always cash for a mayor to make meaningless PR trips to Ghana on the taxpayers’ dime!
Wonder how many Hollywood stars will wake out of their slumber. Maybe this is the end of Hollywood. God Bless Texas!
