Actor Alec Baldwin has filed a lawsuit against New Mexico prosecutors and the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office, alleging “malicious” prosecution in the wake of the tragic 2021 shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film Rust. This comes after Baldwin’s manslaughter case was dismissed during his July trial, with the actor’s legal team accusing officials of withholding critical evidence and pursuing the case for “political” and “personal” reasons.
The shooting shocked Hollywood and reignited debates over firearm safety on movie sets. Baldwin, who was both the actor holding the weapon and a producer on the film, faced intense scrutiny for his role in the incident. Despite this, he managed to evade criminal charges, sparking criticism that justice has not been served for Hutchins and her family.
In the lawsuit filed in Santa Fe, Baldwin’s attorneys claim that the special prosecutor and sheriff’s office conspired to bring him to trial for “political” gain. They point to a comment made by former special prosecutor Andrea Reeb, who allegedly suggested the case could bolster her political career. The complaint further alleges that prosecutor Kari Morrissey presented “false and incomplete” testimony to secure Baldwin’s grand jury indictment.
While Baldwin’s legal team seeks financial damages, they also call for accountability from those who pursued his case. “Defendants must now be held accountable for their malicious and unlawful pursuit of Baldwin,” the lawsuit states. But this aggressive counteraction has drawn criticism, especially given Baldwin’s role as a producer and central figure in the Rust tragedy.
Halyna Hutchins lost her life when Baldwin pointed a reproduction 1873 single-action revolver at her during a rehearsal. Baldwin has claimed he did not pull the trigger, but forensic evidence has suggested otherwise. The gun discharged a live round, allegedly loaded inadvertently by weapons handler Hannah Gutierrez Reed.

Some people are more equal than others...
Purely disgusting. He doesn’t deserve a CENT. If there was any justice in this case, he would be paying through the nose, from PRISON.
You can’t make this feces up.
A blue state. Meh.
Hopefully he’s being sued for millions by the heirs of the dead woman and the guy who was shot but survived.
This guy is a class one grade A a$$hole. This self entitled elitist grateful he got by with it and maintained a low profile. But is level of superiority and arrogance won’t let him.
Any run of the mill Joe or Jane in this country that points a loaded weapon at another person, pulls the trigger and kill that other person can and will be convicted of a least manslaughter.
This is a two tier just-us system where us peons get peed on and the entitled get off Scot free.
Chutzpah!
He pulls the trigger a woman takes the fall and he’s the victim.
Yeah, he did settle with the family of the woman he killed. Not sure if the suit from the guy he shot who survived has been settled. Part of the settlement agreement was they made the husband of the woman he killed a producer of the movie. They have like 17 producers, including Baldwin.
I don’t think it is easy to sue for malicious prosecution. He certainly has chutzbah.
Not sure if he has appeared in a lot of movies since this.
It is more than negligence and arrogance. He probably was mad at her and fired the gun at her on purpose, thinking it wasn’t loaded.
There was negligence by Baldwin, the young woman armorer, and others that the gun was loaded.
I think he murdered her, cold-blooded.
That is very likely what happened. The first story reported after the shooting by some who were there was that Hutchins was unsatisfied with the performance in the just completed scene and asked for another take. Baldwin got upset, pointed the gun at her saying "take this" and fired. I've never heard that scenario repeated since, but it's the best explanation.
In a way - for that reason I hope wins…..just to highlight the stupidity.
He’s not going to like his face to face with God very much then.
