Lead was widely used in the past.
It is actually very good material.
Easy to melt, malleable, noncorrosive.
Ideal for plumbing!
Romans had all hose plumbing made from lead.

Lead pipes used to be common, if you look into the Flint situation the lead leaching issue arose when they switched from the Lake Huron water to the corrosive Flint river water about 2014 which caused the lead pipes to start leaching their lead.
