The announcement was made by the Louisiana Department of Health on Monday, Jan. 6.
The patient, a man over 65 with underlying health conditions, was hospitalized before succumbing to the illness after exposure to a non-commercial backyard flock and wild birds.
The Louisiana Department of Health said it has conducted a public health investigation and found no additional cases or evidence of person-to-person transmission.
The department extended condolences to the patient’s family and stated this will be the final update regarding the patient to respect the person's privacy.
Public Health Risk Remains Low Health officials assure the public that the risk of H5N1 infection remains low.
However, individuals who work closely with birds or have recreational exposure are at higher risk. LDH recommends the following protective measures:
* Avoid Direct Contact: Do not handle sick or dead birds or their droppings, and avoid bringing sick wild animals into your home.
* Protect Pets: Keep pets away from sick or dead animals and their feces.
* Cook Food Thoroughly: Ensure poultry, eggs, and animal products are fully cooked to eliminate pathogens.
* Avoid Unpasteurized Products: Do not consume raw milk or cheeses from animals suspected of carrying bird flu.
Those exposed to sick or dead birds should monitor for symptoms such as respiratory issues or conjunctivitis for 10 days following exposure. If symptoms develop, inform healthcare providers about the exposure for appropriate testing and treatment.

‘a man over 65.’
right. how much over 65, like 95? what a bunch of...
One of our cats is an inside/outside cat. No idea if she’s killing birds; she occasionally brings home a dead mouse.
I’ll have to lay off the bird cheese. Darn.
Hooray!
We got one! We got one!
Mask up, everybody!
“...this will be the final update regarding the patient to respect the person’s privacy.”
He’s dead, Jim. Maybe he has no more right to privacy?
I have over 100 chickens and all the neighborhood tweety birds flock to my farm. I also have a pig, horses, a donkey, and cats.
The symptoms are the same as a normal cold. I just got over having a chest cold.
Was it bird flu? I’ll never know because I don’t run to the doctor when I get sick. There are no sick days on the farm.
And we have lunatics running laboratories TRYING to get bird flu to mutate into a human-killing pathogen.
It IS a pandemic - of birds.
This H5N1 virus has been infecting humans since 1997. Most of the cases are mild and it does not transmit among humans very efficiently.
Don’t worry. Bill Gates has a vaccine ready.
“Is this another flu developed by monkeying and moneying around with genetics?”
Nope.
This is a well-understood animal virus that doesn’t infect people readily. So is H7N9.
What’s new is that the virus seems to have developed the ability to spread readily from birds to cattle.
“First US Human Death From Bird Flu Reported: Authorities have confirmed the first human death in the United States caused by highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1”
so highly pathogenic that one person has died ...
Yeah, a boat would work. Still be a good idea to have the neck waders on in case the boat tips. LOL
I’m not buyin’ into this just like I didn’t buy into the WuFlu garbage. There’s this thing called ‘do your own research’ that works pretty well. The gubmint and enemedia hate everyone who does it.
I’ve seen the ‘positivity’ messaging on X the past couple of days. Apparently something Elon started but he’s posting a lot that doesn’t fall under that banner. The info does need to be out there and I’m glad he’s doing it.
the flu is packing its bags
its going on holiday
OMG, somebody died, somebody died.
Biden wishes Chyna had developed this version of the bird flu earlier...but he thought garland and Co would have prevailed, even though Biden wished garland had gone after DJT sooner, etc etc
The seasonal flu, as it's called, kills between 30,000 and 80,000 people per year.
This bird flu has killed one person.
I am not a licensed mathematician so I will comment no further.
How much over 65?
What pre-existing conditions?
This guy could have been 65 and 1 day and the picture of health except for some mi ill or condition, or 90 with heart disease, liver disease and was on chemotherapy for cancer and ready to drop dead if the wind changed direction. Rather significant fact have been left out (as usual) with the clear motive of scaring the general population (as usual).
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I ain’t buying their BS at ALL this time.
Is there a jab for that? Can I get an app that tracks me and reports me to the CDC so they can control my activities to keep me healthy. Is it legal to have a home gym. Is it safe to jog or ride a bike in fresh air? What is the vax schedule? So many questions.
One bird flu death in a person who probably had a weak immune system and or died of preexisting medical problem: Hysteria.
most cases of the bird flu have been mild: CDC report of 100 plus folk caring for infected cows: showed most of those sick didn't have bird flu, most of those who tested positive (less than a dozen) had a mild cold with pink eye, and only one got sick enough to go to the hospital
