President Trump on Monday extended a freeze on green cards for new immigrants and signed an executive order to suspend new H-1B, L-1, J and other temporary work visas for skilled workers, managers and au pairs through the end of the year.
The goal of the move is to protect 525,000 jobs as part of the White House response to job losses caused by the coronavirus pandemic, said a senior administration official, who spoke to reporters on the condition of anonymity. NPR first reported the impending order on Saturday.
"Americans have been hurt through no fault of their own due to the coronavirus," the official said. "And the president is prioritizing getting them back into the labor supply and getting them to work and standing on their own two feet again."

One thing is for certain, the President is constitutionally in control of immigration into the United States. He doesn't control naturalization but he can control immigration by refusing to issue visas and closing the border itself.
I looked to see if this was ever overturned but found no evidence that it was.
The article is 4 years old. Come on man.
Repost on Jan. 20.
It sounds like he is singing a different tune now.
It’s impressive what $200M of Musk’s money can accomplish.
I’m glad this 4-year old article was posted today. It’s a reminder of what can be done. Hopefully Trump is still in this mindset even with Elon and Vivek public giving themselves massages over the wonderfulness of low paid foreign labor.
If he would just put a 25% tariff on everything a company sells that have HB1 visa employees the problem will fix itself.
Don't worry, I will.
Why is it so important to you that we don't talk about this at all?
June 2020
Why do that when he can just shut it down? The tariff would only be passed on to consumers.
I wish he could but tariffs are for imported goods. Now he might stretch the concept and put a tariff on all services provided by offshore individuals and companies but that is probably a stretch.
Have the DemoMarxists started calling him Hitler yet?
I know since I put the date into the post myself. Amazing. I'm bringing up Trump's suspensions of the colonization visas up now because Trump is the President again and should repeat the suspension on day one of his presidency.
This probably explains why Tech Bros became “tech right” during the election. Kiss up to Trump and try to convince him to NOT stop the H1B visa scam
He doesn’t control naturalization
Unless it’s under questioning reasons.
Don’t be an ass!
Holy moly. I never heard of that.
They really hate us. I can’t envision any other system of government that would treat it’s people so badly.
These retrospective posts (>1-4 years old or older) are getting to be a bit much. Too many to count this week. Difficult to spot on a small screen.
IMHO, a new rule should be that if posting an OLD headline, regardless the reason (say, >30 days...obviously subjective, with the REASON for the old post definitively in comment #1, as demonstrated by wildcard_redneck), the ORIGINAL DATE of the article should be posted at the end of the headline in [BRACKETS].
Again, IMHO.
You and the other cheerleaders for rampant immigration keep saying that there's no way President Trump can end all the H1B visas and that he has to focus on illegal immigration. This article points out your lies and obfuscations. Trump was able to unilaterally, using his president powers alone, reduce the number of work visa immigrants without Congress. He could do this again on day one of his administration this month. If he doesn't that tells us everything we need to know. That is why I posted this 4 year-old article, to prove you wrong.
You open borders types are sure getting shrill and nasty about these visas and all I can say to that is, tough.
Whatcha been drinkin'? Smokin'???
