The Great Christmas H1B War of 2024
Postcards from the Barsoom Substack ^ | December 30, 2024 | John Carter

Posted on 12/30/2024 6:42:14 PM PST by packagingguy

For the last week the only thing anyone on Twitter – and, by extension, the rest of the Internet – has been talking about is the H1B visa.

The fun started when Sriram Krishnan, brought on by the incoming Trump administration as an Artificial Intelligence policy advisor, mused about lifting country caps on the widely reviled H1B visa. This elicited enthusiastic support from a chorus of tech CEOs, who insisted that there is a severe shortage of skilled engineers in the United States and, presumably, the West more generally, which can only be met by poaching the ‘best and brightest’ of the world’s ‘elite human capital’ and importing it by the imperial ton.

Predictably – predictable to anyone who’s been paying attention, which apparently does not include tech CEOs – the tech bros running with this sentiment slammed face-first into a hard granite wall of No!

… It turns out, for example, that despite being capped at around 85,000 per year, the Biden administration was routinely bringing in ten times this number...

Economics and legality are distractions, chaff thrown up by one side or the other to keep attention away from the primal psychological forces that are actually at work:

The territory of one people being given to others.

In particular, the white peoples of the world being displaced and disinherited, as their lands, their institutions, and their infrastructure are taken from them lot by lot and job by job by colonizers from the global south.

That is, in the end, what it comes down to.

I’ve been here since 2001, newbie. And I am a conservative, not a McCainiac.

You’re still a troll..

It is a cliche for example of how many trolls are supposedly from the class of ‘98.

Yet, you can’t provide a single example where I am wrong, or a troll. You just don’t like people who aren’t for unlimited immigration. If you’ll look, you are actually a troll. You just post brief, content-free insults.

You’re wrong.

And lazy.

And therefore a troll.

That's what Democrats say.

And we don't need tens of millions of illegals here.

We sould remove all of them at the same time.

Have you ever heard of the Republican party? They can barely accomplish one thing. And really, even that is a stretch.

They have a lot of voters expecting one thing. If Republicans don't deliver, they won't ever accomplish anything again.

I know. Stop tuouching yourself in glee over it, though.

It’s unseemly.

Remember, Trump already passed reforms in his first term:

In 2017, Trump signed the “Buy American and Hire American: Putting American Workers First” Executive Order.
It was supposed to prevent fraud and abuse in the H-1B and H-2B programs:
https://www.uscis.gov/archive/buy-american-and-hire-american-putting-american-workers-first

In 2020, the Dept. of Labor, under Trump, adopted a rule called “Strengthening Wage Protections for the Temporary and Permanent Employment of Certain Aliens in the United States.”
It required foreign workers’ salaries to be on par with American workers so that “the employment of immigrant and nonimmigrant workers . . . does not adversely affect the wages and job opportunities of U.S. workers.”
https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2020/10/08/2020-22132/strengthening-wage-protections-for-the-temporary-and-permanent-employment-of-certain-aliens-in-the

Yet, companies still found a way to abuse the program, and they still prefer to hire H1B workers.

One reason is that companies can exercise more control over them. When a company sponsors an ‘international worker,’ that worker can’t easily quit and go to work for another company.

Many different kinds of work visa programs should be ended or cut back drastically, including visas for lower-wage seasonal jobs.

Up to 20-25 years ago, you could still find an entry level job and work your way up.

Now, most of those jobs are gone. Many jobs have gone to other countries. Many other jobs have been automated.

Meanwhile, many jobs in this country are filled by foreign workers here on temporary visas.
