Mumbai: The fierce row over Indian immigrants and H-1B visas that’s roiling Donald Trump’s team even before he takes office misses the point and isn’t borne out by data, said Aravind Srinivas, founder of Perplexity AI. Illegal immigration is the real issue, said the IIT graduate who’s worked at DeepMind and OpenAI, and is himself in the US on an H-1B visa.
“Clearly, it surprised everybody online and it's not exactly data driven--the claims that the H-1B or Indian immigrants are taking away the jobs of laid-off American tech workers,” he told ET in an interview. “Indians are also being laid off and honestly, the real problem… is the illegal immigration. That’s what the government needs to cut down on.”
The issue has polarised Trump’s top supporters, with the opposing camps being dubbed MAGA (Make America Great Again) and DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency). Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, who will head this proposed cost-cutting agency, have spoken out strongly in favour of H-1B visas, while Steve Bannon and Laura Loomer are MAGA supporters who have attacked their opponents, accusing them of being billionaire tech bros with little interest in working for the welfare of the Trump base.
Srinivas said it was unfair to drag Sriram Krishnan, Trump’s pick for AI policy advisor, into the dispute by citing his past tweets supporting H-1B visas and immigration. He’s also expecting tempers to cool down.
“If people actually took a look at the data and saw it for themselves, they wouldn't be this angry,” Srinivas said. “I feel it's going to all settle down. I think we should all feel good about someone as high calibre as Sriram influencing AI policy. People need to understand he has nothing to do with immigration, and stop taking his past tweets out of context”

Cases of repeated H-1B abuse
This case is not unique. “In one case allegedly involving India’s Kandi Srinivasa Reddy, he set up 13 related companies and submitted over 3,000 registrations for around 288 employees. This meant there were more than 10 registrations per applicant, giving them a significant advantage over someone who submitted just one registration. The selected candidates were then rented out to tech companies in the US, with a percentage of the worker’s pay collected as commission,” Vivek Tandon, Founder and CEO of EB5 BRICS told Business Standard.
Americans expect President Trump and the Republican Congress to make comprehensive reforms.
You can kick and bray like an angry donkey or participate in a productive fashion that best serves concerned American citizens.
An acknowledgement that the system is defective and needs reform is an essential first step.
Globalist POS please go away.
“and it’s not exactly data driven—the claims that the H-1B or Indian immigrants are taking away the jobs of laid-off American tech workers,” he told ET in an interview.”
Then explain entire shops firing Americans after they are forced to train H1Bs who replace them. Explain PG&E in California, explain Disney, explain TVA. They all did the mass firings and replacement with H1B.
H1B is laden with scam ! My view is the H1B visa category should be terminated - the name is too toxic and too much of a lightning rod. Create a new category with very strict guidelines, very limited in scope and with huge penalties if those guidelines are breached. The problem is even if Trump were successful in reforming it, as soon as the Democrats are back they will trash all that and open the floodgates once again.
The Coolie Caucus is still busy this morning, trying to calm it all down. They didn’t expect this blowback.
Really? In that case, tell us the exact number.
Actually - tell us the exact number of Americans working for private companies in India that are 100% Indian owned?
“Asian Indian Americans are the most Socialist immigrant group in USA History.
80% of Asian Indian Americans voted to reelect Barack Obama in 2012.
78% of Asian Indian Americans voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016.”
Also, nearly all the coolies are pagans and their worldview is deeply informed by the British culture. They hate free speech, the second amendment, free elections etc.
No other country treats is common citizens as bad as the USA. To them we are all nameless krill.
India and China both have space programs that send rockets into space.
They love to play the “developing country” card. They are direct competitors, IMHO.
So far since this started I have failed to see one Indian tell the truth about how Indians are scamming H1B visas.
Yep, and it doesn’t stop there. It was W. Bush that started it Anyone that stills holds respect for Bush, are clueless I guess.
“If people actually took a look at the data and saw it for themselves, they wouldn’t be this angry”
The man is clearly not familiar with American politics.
Steve Bannon and his motley crew of internet ankle biters need to take a big step back. Attacking DOGE is dumb as heck, even if produces clicks and views.
The H1B program has a statutory limit of 85,000 visas per year. This year the federal government approved more than 10 times that many (868k).

Even the last year of the Trump’s first term was way over the limit, 562k.
Most Conservatives do not know that Donald Trump more than doubled the number of OPT work visas during his First Term.
The number of OPT STEM visas went from 105,000 to 220,000 under Trump.
The current number is more than 300,000.
I do not know who approved the new increase.
Also, the OPT STEM three year work visa has now become an adjunct to the H1B program.
After three years, OPT workers roll straight into a H1B job, for up to six years, and then roll straight into a Green Card job.
Our immigration system is a big failure. Over and over companies are discriminating against US workers in various ways.
Apple agreed to back pay of over 18 million and penalties of over 6 million because they discriminated over the PERM program
“The department’s investigation, which started in February 2019, found that Apple engaged in a pattern or practice of citizenship status discrimination in recruitment for positions it hired through PERM, and that the company’s unlawful discrimination prejudiced U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, lawful permanent residents, and those granted asylum or refugee status. These less effective recruitment practices deterred protected workers from applying to positions that Apple preferred to fill instead with PERM beneficiaries.”
But can they generate their own power....?
