Over the past two days, President-elect Donald J. Trump has made clear that he has designs for American territorial expansion, declaring that the United States has both security concerns and commercial interests that can best be addressed by bringing the Panama Canal and Greenland under American control or outright ownership.
Mr. Trump’s tone has had none of the trolling jocularity that surrounded his repeated suggestions in recent weeks that Canada should become America’s “51st state,” including his social media references to the country’s beleaguered prime minister as “Governor Justin Trudeau.”
Instead, while naming a new ambassador to Denmark — which controls Greenland’s foreign and defense affairs — Mr. Trump made clear on Sunday that his first-term offer to buy the landmass could, in the coming term, become a deal the Danes cannot refuse.
He appears to covet Greenland both for its strategic location at a time when the melting of Arctic ice is opening new commercial and naval competition and for its reserves of rare earth minerals needed for advanced technology.
“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World,” Mr. Trump wrote on social media, “the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”
On Saturday evening, he had accused Panama of price-gouging American ships traversing the canal, and suggested that unless that changed, he would abandon the Jimmy Carter-era treaty that returned all control of the canal zone to Panama.

It’s high time America protects itself from within and without.
No words to spare about Biden’s rash of pardons for mass murderers?
What people?
My little college town has more people than the entire island.
Greenland is very cold. Arctic cold. Colder than Alaska. If global warming ever took off, Greenland might make a good place for people to migrate to.
It would make a good place now to hold illegal aliens while adjudicating their asylum claims or until they can be properly deported.
It would make a great place to relocate many offices of the federal government. The Billions allocated for a new FBI headquarters could make a nice downpayment on Greenland AND put the money to use as it has been allocated. Department of Education? IRS? ATF? The sky is the limit.

My thoughts are...time for a little competition...find another route.
Greenland...we just want bases and trade.
There will never be a lot of people there as it’s completely inhospitable to agriculture. You can only feed so many by just fishing. For that matter, I wonder how they fuel or power infrastructure for things like heating. There are no geothermal or hydroelectric sources of energy, and AFAIK no oil or NatGas reserves. Does Denmark have to send regular fuel shipments?
56K is a lot of differing viewpoints on the issue.
Denmark (the current landlord for Greenland) is not equipped to deal with these global-level concerns.

Not true, they are sending 2 more dog sled teams. Very formidable!
Greenland is icy, Iceland is green.
We just want to ship our criminals there.
We just need an Australia. Resistance is futile.
Trump is already handling the MSM. heh
Russia has bigger ice breakers now
—
The US has only one heavy ice breaker and it is based out of Seattle. But it is held together with spit, balling ire and duct tape.
The 3 newest cutters will not be launched until 2027-2028 at the earliest. Like all US cutters, it will be conventionally powered, with a hull designed to travel on the open ocean to Antarctica - it may or may not have offensive weapons on board.
Meanwhile, Russia is churning out nuclear powered heavy breakers like hot cakes.
Any ice breaking will have to be by Canadian or Danish breakers as the US will not have any; none or those will be competitive with the Russians on any level.
it’s completely inhospitable to agriculture.

Just set up indoor hydroponic farms
U.S. control of Panama should never have been given up. Having control of Greenland has both arguments for & against, I guess.
“Why should the US aggravate Denmark and Greenland simply to avoid operating a mine in Wyoming?”
Can you spell EPA? and every other Democrat run organization in the USA?
That is the American problem, Democrats. So go elsewhere.
Geez, you could get the entire population into Yankee Stadium.
Largely crap.
Greenland does have some oil and gas. Offshore but there.
We will be needing every drop and cubic meter, soon.
I think Trump considers Greenland important strategically with China expanding. The Canal also.
Bills fans are whacked...one guy ripped his shirt off during last Sundays' game...it was 15 degrees out. Every seat was occupied.
Not quite....46,500 stadium.....56,500 population
