LG's new TV creates a nifty illusion of on-screen content floating in mid-air

After stealing the show at CES 2024 in January, LG's totally transparent TV is finally available to buy. The 77-inch Signature OLED T can be yours for an eye-watering US$60,000.

With that kind of scratch, you could buy three top-of-the-line 85-inch Samsung 'The Terrace' Full Sun Neo QLED 4K outdoor TVs designed to be used in direct sunlight – or a 2025 BMW 5-series car.

Anyway, you're here about the Signature OLED T. We're talking about a 4K 120 Hz OLED TV you can literally see through when it's displaying a picture on screen – creating the illusion of content floating in mid-air, and merging with its surroundings.

Don’t know about others, but for that kind of money, I can think about many things I could use that cost less, or maybe get a car AND a garage put it in. Talk about a fool & his money parting from each other.

It’s pretty; but I don’t like huge TVs, don’t have a window like that to put it in, and as someone else said, you’re going to see all the wires plugging everything in, at the back :-)

There are some people on FR who are quite expert on these things. I am not one of them.

When was the last time you shopped for tv’s? How well do you see tv’s at friends’ or neighbors’ houses if you ever flip them on while visiting? How do you do with streaming on your computer monitor? Upgrading a monitor might be an option to consider.

But to cut to the chase, get thee to a showroom — Best Buy will do fine if it’s a reasonably big store — and do a little comparison shopping. You are troubleshooting a serious viewing or vision issue, so I’d stay away from Smitty’s Discount tv’s and Costco. Any modern tv you get will be much better than what you got 10, 15 or 20 years ago, but there are several technologies in play, and they do make a difference on resolution, color and brightness. And cost.

If the sales staff is competent, discuss your vision issues with them. My nearest Best Buy has a Magnolia affiliate co-located with them. Magnolia is oriented to higher end, home theater systems, and office systems, but I’ve found the local guys to be excellent in talking old geezers like me through the “last tv I will probably ever buy” type questions. I also do most of my computer shopping at a local Microcenter, and their sales people are excellent. Do a lot of comparison shopping and take your time.

Also discuss it with your optometrist, who may refer you further.

You say you can see everything else just fine. That resonates with me as a big part of my problem was repeated retinal tears and repeated bouts of laser surgery, leaving me with enough floaters to seriously reduce the light reaching the retina. There was also a film that had started to grow over the retina in one eye.

The retinal surgeons can clean up some serious problems. Others, they can’t. Mine were fixable and 100 percent covered by insurance. I have a biennial date with the retinal surgeons due to my past adventures, and I had been discussing surgery for several years. They said that in my case, there was no time pressure, but when the nuisance factor and lifestyle impacts (e.g. night vision and driving) got bad enough, it was time to consider it.

This is the kind of thing to talk through very carefully with your docs, and it might even be worth switching on insurance options at least for a year or two if that’s possible. I squeezed the trigger this past year, and everything was 100 percent covered by insurance. YMMV.

If you see everything else just fine and it’s just the tv viewing that bothers you, it sounds to me like you should be able to find the fix. If you do get a better tv, invest in a good soundbar and DVD/Blu-ray player as well.

I don’t know what subscriptions you need for particular shows if you are still watching linear tv. I watch mostly movies.

I’d rather wait until I can use an entire wall.

P.S. If you do cut the cable, get a smart tv or splurge $40 bucks (or whatever they cost now) and get a Roku attachment to hook to your existing tv. You can jump around as much as you want, although you’ll have to figure out the necessary subscriptions for your shows. The market is adapting rapidly. The streamers try desperately to reduce churn, but consumers are figuring out how to subscribe to X for a couple of months, catch up on whatever, and then drop it and switch to something else.

In response, the streamers are now bundling their subscriptions. They are rapidly reinventing cable packages. The whole streaming thing was a mistake.

I’ve found that a lot of cable and network news stations can’t be subscribed through ROKU. They ask you for your ‘television provider’, and ROKU isn’t one of the possibilities.

I’ll take your word for it. When we upgraded, we of course got a smart tv. My wife also wants to keep the cable package because she has some shows she follows.

Before we upgraded, one of my adult daughters hooked a Roku device to our old tv so that she could supplement with something we didn’t get on cable. That worked fine, but she took it home with her after we upgraded. We don’t miss it.

The graphic they chose is confusing.

That box handles all of your peripherals. It sends those signals to the TV wirelessly.

Not a projector.

That’s why i ended up buying the 270 pound Sony HD CRT.
The flat screens at the time were outragiously priced with fairly poor picture quality.
At the time the stores were pushing those DLP projection tv’s with the motor spinning a disco ball mirror.
A customer was questioning me on my crt purchase i said the lcd were way too expensive and basically look like crap and DLP was ridiculous.

Thank god i didn’t plop $$$ down on a DLP...

The Sony eventually completely died a few years ago, my mom was using it.
I was both sad and surprised being a Sony and all.
Getting rid of it was a pain.

If it worked as a window, it would be a real space saver in a smaller home. But if you have sixty grand to blow on a TV, that's probably not an issue. LG's made some jumbos (see Unbox Therapy for examples), they cost much more than this, but not an order of magnitude, and aren't see-through.
