LG's new TV creates a nifty illusion of on-screen content floating in mid-air

After stealing the show at CES 2024 in January, LG's totally transparent TV is finally available to buy. The 77-inch Signature OLED T can be yours for an eye-watering US$60,000.

With that kind of scratch, you could buy three top-of-the-line 85-inch Samsung 'The Terrace' Full Sun Neo QLED 4K outdoor TVs designed to be used in direct sunlight – or a 2025 BMW 5-series car.

Anyway, you're here about the Signature OLED T. We're talking about a 4K 120 Hz OLED TV you can literally see through when it's displaying a picture on screen – creating the illusion of content floating in mid-air, and merging with its surroundings.

Beyond all the shows and movies you'll stream, you can also enjoy the OLED T's transparent effect using specially developed screensaver content called T Objet, which features themes like nature and art.

I thought it was about an x-ray TV, where you could see-through the clothing of the weather girls.

Now that would be worth $60,000.

Why do I want to see through my TV?

The only reason I can think of is to make porn somewhat more realistic. Other than that, I think it would be a distraction.

In 2018, I paid $3,500 for my Samsung 82" Class Q6FN QLED Smart 4K UHD TV. It's down to $1,200 now, for an 85" model. And I added a Polk Audio Sound Bar/Woofer to it. Still VERY NICE!

Really? Another copy and paste without reading before you hit “Post”?

Heavy sigh.

I suppose when you post articles you hand write out everything? Re-type it yourself?

It will be for sale at Best Buy for $999 in two years. I’ll wait.

Once cheaper, I expect this to be common in store front window displays or built in as windows for places where they want a view most of the time and a TV some of the time.

Better to have see-through friends that like to block the tv.

Re: my comment about every window can become a tv ....

I’ve already thought of a practical application. I live in an older, relatively small house. I’ve long been at the point at which buying a book means throwing a book away. For walls that aren’t lined with books, I have more worthy art — mostly artefacts of my travels, but pretty nice — and historical artefacts than i have room for. When we moved to a larger flat screen tv as a sop to our aging eyes, we had to sacrifice a wall. That was painful.

Being able to convert a window into a tv and back again is actually a highly desirable option for libraries and studies. Another demonstration of how fast markets find a use.

“4k streaming isn’t yet the standard”

But 4k upscaling is.

When digital watches first came out I had a friend who’s father paid $3,000 for one. Less than two years later you could buy them for $12.95

To some people, spending $60K on a TV is like one of us spending $5 on a cocktail in a bar.

Fantastic, awesome, spectacular and I have no desire for one.

A HUD for my helmet or a car, maybe embedded in my sunglasses (without spying Meta AI). Seeing some TV person floating around, nah.

I remember my Dad kicking our 1950s ten-inch RCA to improve the reception.

Just me. I am not a fan. They are better than a tv’s inbuilt audio but a far cry from what an a/v receiver and 3 external speakers (optionally 2 more) could do while costing not that much more.
