A low omega-6, omega-3 rich diet and fish oil may slow prostate cancer growth
Medical Xpress / University of California, Los Angeles / Journal of Clinical Oncology ^ | Dec. 13, 2024 | William J. Aronson et al

A study offers evidence that dietary changes may help reduce cancer cell growth in patients undergoing active surveillance.

The findings show a diet low in omega-6 and high in omega-3 fatty acids, combined with fish oil supplements, significantly reduced the growth rate of prostate cancer cells in men with early-stage disease.

To determine whether diet or supplements can play a role in managing prostate cancer, the team conducted a prospective clinical trial, called CAPFISH-3, that included 100 men with low risk or favorable intermediate risk prostate cancer who chose active surveillance. Participants were randomly assigned to either continue their normal diet or follow a low omega-6, high omega-3 diet, supplemented with fish oil, for one year.

Participants in the intervention arm received dietary personalized counseling from a registered dietitian nutritionist, either in-person, through telehealth or by phone.

The goal was to create a favorable balance of their intake of omega-6 and omega-3 fats and make participants feel empowered to control how they change their behavior. They were also given fish oil capsules for extra omega-3s. The control group did not get any dietary counseling or take fish oil capsules.

The researchers tracked changes in a biomarker called the Ki-67 index, which indicates how fast cancer cells are multiplying—a key predictor of cancer progression, metastasis and survival.

Same site biopsies were obtained at the start of the study and again after the one-year mark, using an image fusion device that helps track and locate the cancer sites.

Results showed the low omega-6, omega-3 rich diet and fish oil group had a 15% decrease in the Ki-67 index, while the control group saw a 24% increase.

"This significant difference suggests that the dietary changes may help slow cancer growth, potentially delaying or even preventing the need for more aggressive treatments," said Aronson

Key stuff:

“Results showed the low omega-6, omega-3 rich diet and fish oil group had a 15% decrease in the Ki-67 index, while the control group saw a 24% increase.”

It was a one year study, but it is remarkable a simple switch toward Omega-3 fats while reducing Omega-6 fats, had a 39% impact on prostate cancer cell progression. This wouldn’t cure cancer, but would really be beneficial for people and help in a number of other inflammatory issues.

Do note monounsaturated and saturated fats to not come into this concern, at all. Both Omega-3 and Omega-6 fats are polyunsaturated fats.

Omega-6 fats increase inflammation while Omega-3 fats decrease it. You do need some of both, as they are considered “essential.”

I don't know how legit the attack on seed oils is, but this study suggests a reason why they might be a problem. Seed oils like Canola, corn, cottonseed, etc are very in Omega 6.

Had they actually consumed fish the percentage decrease would have been significantly higher.

Just sayin’…

I could consume all the salmon I want and not reduce my risk of prostate cancer at all. That’s just how it is if you’re female…

If I read this right there was only a 100 men involved in this study, I’m like yawn, this is just another study paid for by some company to promote their product. If study involved 1000 men I’ll be more apt to believe or pay a little more attention to the finding from the study. And who long the study was, was it over a year, or longer or shorter, who knows, if anyone knows speak up.

Gives you man boobs in high school. Makes you popular in P.E. class.

I friggen HATE soy. Put me on the list.

And isnt that about the Omega 3, 6 percentage recommended by all the X-sperts? Omega 3s and 6s. Trying everything except this. Have had terrible luck ever getting on a balance with it. There were some fans on another thread of some krill supplement that was very good. Maybe they will chime in.

That is a great chart. We cook with bacon fat or butter or ghee, when I’m not so lazy. Olive oil is the way! Right now, ALL of my old bottles of seed oils are all collecting dust and pushed to the back of the cabinets.

I will make a quart jar of ghee before Christmas.

Ginger may help to kill prostate cancer cells.

Benefits of whole ginger extract in prostate cancer

SNIP....."Discussion:

"Ginger rhizome is extensively used in the form of a fresh paste or dried powder to flavour food and beverages in places such as India and China(14). The present study reports a novel finding that oral consumption of the extract of whole ginger, a commonly consumed vegetable worldwide, significantly inhibits prostate tumour progression in both in vitro and in vivo mice models. The anticancer effect of GE was coupled with its significant antiproliferative, cell-cycle inhibitory and pro-apoptotic activity in cell culture as well as in prostate tumour xenograft models. In addition, we also identified that GE strongly suppressed in vitro and in vivo expression of cyclins/cdks that intricately orchestrate cell-cycle progression."
