A New York homeowner unearthed a mastodon jaw that was peeking from beneath the soil in the backyard of their home. This is the first time a find like this has occurred in 11 years.
The researchers who were alerted to the Orange County resident’s discovery spent two and a half days digging in the individual’s backyard. They uncovered more mastodon bone pieces and a complete adult jaw.
Mastodons are closely related to elephants and the extinct wooly mammoth. Researchers and historians tend to say that these animals roamed all over the world, but their fossils have only been found in North America.
The New York homeowner said he was “thrilled that our property held the remarkable Mastodon jaw” His statement also said that when he discovered the teeth, he knew he had something special in his hands, and he had to call experts to understand exactly what it was he was holding.
Grecian Delight supports Greece The Mastodon jaw was then recovered by staff form the New York State Museum, and the State University of New York. The fossil is in peak condition, as it was well preserved, and could help provide more information to improve our understanding of the creatures that roamed North America during the Ice Age.
Dr Robert Feranec, Director of Research and Collections, and Curator of Ice Age Animals at the New York State Museum, said that the Mastodon discovered in this person’s backyard “provides a unique opportunity to study the ecology of this magnificent species, which will enhance our understanding of the Ice Age ecosystems from this region.”
More than 150 mastodon fossils have been found in the state of New York and one third of them have come from Orange County, which is where this discovery was made.
A Mastodon toe and rib fragments were also found The jaw is the main discovery because it’s the best-preserved fossil, but two other remarkable discoveries were made, as researchers also recovered Mastodon toe and rib fragments from the site.
It has also been announced that there is hope for the immediate area to be explored, as researchers believe more bones could potentially be recovered.
Despite Mastodons going extinct some 13,000 years ago, Orange County in NY continues to be a key area to recover fossils of these creatures.
This is because the region’s rich glacial soil has preserved numerous prehistoric remains, including several Mastodon skeletons. Perhaps the most remarkable discovery was the Sugar Loaf Mastodon. Unearthed in 1972, it is one of the most complete specimens discovered in the state.
Rex Heuermann, the Gilgo Beach murderer, has already taken credit for this.
Have they been looked for elsewhere?
Excavation for swimming pools is higher in the US. Most locate Mastodons this way.
Good question.
As he was already making plans for the in ground pool following the completion of the mastodon dig.
But not Jimmy Hoffa.......................
I’m sure there’s an underground market for this stuff.
I would assume more of the animals remains would be in close proximity would it not?
You, Sir have just won the internet!
I was amazed at the stacks of ivory tusks at some of the gold mining operations in Alaska.
Also, some carved mammoth tusks found from the melting of the glaciers. They were in perfect condition.
Probably a mob hit. Thanks nickcarraway.
AOC: Those two horrible white protruding things sticking out from their mouths like that. What a way to go through life.
For years I’ve passed a sign on I-91 near Hartford,CT saying “Dinosaur State Park” as I was on the way to NYC. A year ago, having some time to kill,I stopped in. In a sheltered building they have the footprints of a creature (in petrified mud) that scientists say are 200 million years old. So about 90 minutes from NYC we had 200 million year old dinosaurs.
The typical mastodon had more character.
MIL walked out the back door?
It’s not uncommon, after a thunderstorm or even fireworks, to find a stray mastodon in your backyard. So approach it with a ‘biccie’ or a bowl of elephant chow, so you can read the data on its ID tags.
