Awful stuff out of the Old Dominion:
A beloved father died after he was seriously injured during a hunting accident while with his son in Virginia, officials said.
Lester Clayton Harvey Jr., 58, was standing about 10 feet from the bottom of a tree where his group of houndsmen had chased a bear in Lunenburg County on Dec. 9, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources told McClatchy News in an email. One of the hunters shot the bear, and it struck Harvey as it fell.
Harvey was a hunting enthusiast and appeared to regularly go on excursions in the woods with family and friends:
His son Josh said in a Facebook post that his dad was "a hard working, kind, caring man" who " never missed a day of work," who "would give you the shirt off his back," and who "[loved] the outdoors and wouldn't miss a good hunt for nothing:"
His daughter echoed those remarks, writing that Harvey was the "hardest worker I know" and was always "either working or hunting:"
He put a roof on with vertigo, framed houses with sickness, he never missed work. Well unless there was a good hunt to be had.
Josh later wrote of his father: "I am so thankful for all the memories we made and all you taught me I wouldn't be the man I am now if it wasn't for you."
RIP.
And much less frequently you get the bear and the bear gets you.
That’s AWESOME.
If was still more weight than he could bear.
Yes a very fun and exciting way to hunt bears.
You have no clue about hunting bears or bear hunting.
Bear can also be stalked, then you can shoot them like deer or pigs. Just make sure the spices complement the meat, otherwise the taste isn’t right.
Some areas need to control bear numbers as bears often have 3 cubs at a time causing overpopulation.
Out-of-State money came into Oregon to ban the hunting of bear and cougar with dogs (and bait, in the case if bears). It’s been devastating for the deer and elk populations. And then some genius brings in wolves....
👍
If you got a Bar-——
ALL EYES ON THAT BAR!
The key is to bear down until it urs.
I know enough that exhausting a bear with hounds and treeing it is not a sport. I also know that standing under a bear in a tree is not a good idea. But of course, I have the advantage over you by possessing a Y chromosome.
Like your tagline.
I would guess it might be more sporting to be able to capture the bear in a safe manner, and send it to a wildlife preserve or a DNA/genome repository, or a zoo somewhere. Killing a treed bear with a high powered rifle is much easier, almost unfair.. However, I would think that if bear killed a human being, or unnecessarily attacked humans, or was eaten by hungry, starving people it would be ok to kill the bear...
IMHO....flames accepted.
A two for one shot Mr. Crockett tips coon skin cap.
Once it was treed he should have known trouble’s a bruin.
Having been on dozens of hound bear chases.
Having hunted bears for over 50 years.
I have a bit more clue then you.
If you would have read the whole article.
You might understand what went on.
Bears taste really good and make nice hides/rugs.
Do not know of any way to eat a bear when it is alive.
How do you capture a bear in a safe manner.
Then safe for who you or the bear.
Some where over 50,000 bears are killed each year.
Where are you going to find enough zoos to take them all.
Newsflash: Bears don’t have to live in zoos. There is a huge place called “the wild” where bears enjoy living.
News flash humans love living in the woods also.
The minute I step out my front door I am in the woods.
I lived here longer then any bear.
I don’t have to hound and kill exhausted bears in trees in order to know that 1) it isn’t a sport 2) gravity is not your friend when standing underneath a bear in a tree.
Good luck finding your Y chromosome.
MAN UP!
