At a Manhattan gala, imagining an unconstitutional third Trump term

NEW YORK — President-elect Donald Trump has yet to start his second term, but at a raucous black-tie gala in downtown Manhattan, a former aide floated the idea of a possible — and unconstitutional — third presidential run.

“Are you ready for Trump ’28?” asked Stephen K. Bannon, influential podcast host, Trump’s former chief strategist and the featured speaker at the 112th New York Young Republican Club dinner Sunday evening.

The 1,000-person audience roared in approval.

Bannon then suggested that he had consulted another Trump ally, Mike Davis, who had suggested a loophole in the Constitution would allow Trump to run for a third term.

But did he suggest to Bannon that Trump could run a third time? “Of course not!” Davis later told a reporter. “That’s crazy.”

Why crazy? The 22nd Amendment states that “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.”

But some on the right have suggested, without any legal basis, that the amendment refers to two consecutive terms, which would allow for Trump to run for a third time at age 82.

Trump didn’t attend the dinner in his hometown, but he didn’t have to. Each speaker extolled him. Guests wore handbags and scarves embroidered with his name. Some women wore Trump hair clips to secure elaborate updos. A few men donned red MAGA hats. He recorded two video addresses that played over huge screens in the room.

British politician and Brexit advocate Nigel Farage greeted Bannon and other Trump aides as Trump’s media allies Jack Posobiec and Alex Bruesewitz circulated in the cavernous...

Congress limited the presidential term. The founders had nothing to do with it

What makes Congress lifetime terms more precious than the presidents? Congress, that’s who

Journalists have no clue about history nor the constitution or religion for that matter

They’re like doctors telling us what to eat. They’re no authority.

It’s funny they’re pushing for abolition of the Electoral College. They never point out that’d be unconstitutional.

I keep expecting Democrats to sue on the basis that Trump won in 2020 and that therefore he is now ineligible to be President.

I’m cool with just naming Trump First Consul in 2029, and Octavian Barron Trump succeeding him thereafter.
