Driver stopped in Wyoming for covering car in Christmas lights

Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Police in Wyoming are reminding residents to decorate their homes for Christmas instead of their vehicles after a driver was pulled over with their car illuminated by festive lights.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol shared a photo on social media showing a Ford Mustang pulled over by a trooper who noticed the entire vehicle was decked out in colorful lights for the holidays.

"As the holiday season approaches, we would like to remind you of a Wyoming statute," the post said.

The statute in question states that "no person shall drive or move any vehicle or equipment upon any highway with any lamp or device thereon capable of displaying a red or blue light visible from directly in front of the center thereof."

The post said that while decorating a car "might look cool and be festive, we would to remind you that it is illegal. Please remember to stay safe when celebrating this season!"

So, as I read the article, it’s not the lights themselves that are illegal, just the red and blue colors; if they are all white, then this should be legal.

from what’s posted the statement is wrong. it’s not illegal to decorate your vehicle. it’s only illegal (according to the statute) to have a decoration that appears like a red or blue light visible from the center front view.

I saw a car decorated in Christmas lights on Friday night, but the lights were all green and white.

“...then this should be legal.”

Read the statute again. It says you cannot decorate your vehicle with any source that has the capacity to light up red or blue. So if you have a source for the colors you’re violating the statute even if you don’t have red or blue lights on it. Christmas tree lights have the source for those colors.

It is a badly written, maybe, statute in that in the way it is written, if you can plug in red or blue, you can’t decorate the car this way at all. That makes it illegal to decorate the car this way as all color mean nothing, just that it could be red or blue, so no go.

What is it with Mustangs and Christmas lights - I flew into the Bay Area this weekend and saw a Mustang decked out with Christmas lights in the East Bay yesterday.

If somebody makes a red bulb headlight, then everyone driving in Wyoming is breaking the law?

Yes, people will confuse a festively decked out vehicle with a police cruiser. Equine excrement. Just more “bah humbug” in the war on Christmas. Law enforcement should give the enterprising driver a citizenship award, not a citation.

So? Use green, orange and purple lights or any colors other than red or blue.

I saw a car exactly like this in California, covered in Christmas lights and beautifully decorated!

Didn’t see it as a distraction at all.
