The California Department of Motor Vehicles has apologized for an “unacceptable and disturbing” personalized truck license plate that the agency said displayed hate speech related to the Oct. 7 attack on Israel. But a relative of the vehicle's owner said the whole controversy was an unfortunate misunderstanding.
A photo posted on X by the watchdog group StopAntisemitism showed a license plate on a Tesla Cybertruck near Los Angeles that read “LOLOCT7.” LOL is an abbreviation for “laugh out loud.”
The group said the plate seemed to reference Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas militants attacked Israel, killing hundreds of people and prompting an Israeli retaliation against Palestinians in Gaza.
But the son of the truck's owner told ABC 7 in Los Angeles that the personalized plate was not a reference to the Oct. 7 attack at all. He said it referred to the owner, who is a Filipino grandfather. “LOLO” means grandfather in Tagalog, “CT” refers to the Cybertruck, while 7 represents the owner’s seven children, according to the news station.
The DMV issued a statement Thursday, saying the department is “taking swift action to recall these shocking plates, and we will immediately strengthen our internal review process to ensure such an egregious oversight never happens again.”
A spokesperson for the DMV told the Los Angeles Times the license plate should not have passed the review process and, after it was flagged on social media, many people who alerted the department found it offensive.
“The use of hateful language is not only a clear violation of our policies but also a violation of our core values to proudly serve the public and ensure safe and welcoming roadways,” the DMV statement said.

The average person is not a News Hound like most of us here.
They might miss some of the big stories of the moment.
That license plate is cleverly done, and so subtle, it’s message could be overlooked by the average Joe.
Glad sharper minds caught it!
First clue? It was on a Tesla Cybertruck. Who drives those? ;)
Apologizes. Knowing full well what it meant. “Some” say it mocks that day. FUCA
If you have tunnel vision you will see offense in everything you want to. Sheesh. What a stupid reaction.
I coulda have sworn it meant Lights Out Location @ T minus 7
How about LOLGAZA? Would that pass muster?
sure, oct happened ...
BUT IT DID NOT HAPPEN HERE!!!
HAHAHAHA!
Lolo, a Filipino Grandfather.
Easy enough to determine if the article included a picture of the tag. The number 0 and the letter O are usually stamped differently.
But it would be letter 'O' in either case: "LOLO CT" or "LOL OCT". Neither one is number '0'.
“First clue? It was on a Tesla Cybertruck. Who drives those? ;)”
Apparently, a Filipino Grandfather if you read the article. LOLO means grandfather. CT for Cybertruck and 7 for number of grandchildren. I test drove one last week. The drive by wire and rear wheel steering made for a unique and fun driving experience. Unfortunately, the truck is too expensive for me. That and the fact that I love my Ford Lightning too much to part with it.😊
Must have been a DEI clerk who let it through. They don’t read up on world news, just inflammatory drivel.
Stupid headline. The license plate does mock October 7th. The headline quibbles.
The story about Filipino grandfather actually makes more sense than a Hamas fanboy, because what idiot would spend 80k plus for an EV, then put a ‘kick me’ sign on the vehicle? People are starting to learn that it’s an extremely bad idea to mess with the Israelis (or even Jewish people in general), as they have demonstrated that they are extraordinarily good at getting payback.
I did read the article. I posted it! And I’m not buying it.
