Last week’s November jobs report signaled a still-strong labor market, but if you’re a recent college grad with a shiny new diploma, your reality might not be matching up with the overall mood.
According to the latest data from the New York Fed, the unemployment rate for recent grads (ages 22–27 with a bachelor’s or higher) climbed to 5.3% in September — the highest in over two years and up 90 basis points from last year. That’s more than double the 2.5% rate for all college graduates (ages 22–65), and it’s also significantly worse than the rate for the wider workforce, breaking a multi-decade period in which recent college grads generally had lower levels of unemployment.
One possible reason behind the downturn is that employers are simply cooling on college degrees. A report from job site Indeed found that only 17.6% of job postings in October demanded at least a bachelor’s degree, down from about 20% prepandemic, as more employers prioritize hard skills over simply having a degree.
Industries like tech, finance, media, and management — the typical magnets for recent grads — have also been freezing new hires or announcing layoffs since 2023. And it’s not just recent grads feeling the pinch right now: the college experience itself is losing its luster as well at a “concerning rate.” This fall semester, freshman enrollment for 18-year-olds in the US dropped more than 6% year over year according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center.
When did it ever?
Its not a fair comparison to the past at all.
In the past colleges didn’t offer degrees in so many worthless things. People in the past were not going to pay hard earned money for a weird-@ss degree no business would take seriously.

Old joke. Don’t know if it really happened or not.
1940: A group of recruits is lined up before a sergeant.
Sergeant: Who here has a college degree?
One recruit raises his hand.
Sergeant: Fall out for officer candidate school.
2010: A group of recruits is lined up before a sergeant.
Sergeant: Who here has a college degree?
Three recruits raise their hands.
Sergeant: Grab those shovels. You men dig the first ditch.
This is not news.
You want to make some good money nowdays? Learn a trade! Electricians and plumbers make $130/hr. Even gardeners make $50/hr.
And they don’t have to worry about AI taking their jobs.
It’s the revenge of the blue collars.
you mean it is hard to get a job when you have a degree in womens studies?
Or prelaw without going to law school
I work with my hands, waking up at 4 in the morning and getting home at around 8 pm. It is grueling, but I literally make more than anyone I know with the exception of one friend who is literally a brain surgeon. I used to be ashamed, now I keep what I earn to myself so I don’t depress anyone.
Left wing Parents: But that Fighting Against Toxic Masculinity and Contours of Post-Modern Feminism seemed like good majors and worth the tens of thousands in tuition. And the neighbor kid was about to become a DEI Executive intern for a university. Will he have to give that up?

Do tell, what are you doing? Septic?
Yes; that did happen.
Struggling to find jobs. Well, duh. College degrees don’t guarantee work skills. No one will hire DEI brainwashed students. Many degrees have no money producing future. Very few can hire during inflationary times.
No sympathy here. College student bought the lie about modern day college education. Plus most who could vote, voted for Biden/Harris....may they be bypassed by DEI and illegal alien hires...
Why should it? Degrees are bought and paid for these days... Not earned through academic rigors.
Of course it doesn’t. 50 years ago you stood out if you had a college degree. That’s not so anymore. A much higher percentage of people have them and there are plenty who get them in BS majors now....ie various “studies” programs, sociology, etc etc that do nothing to teach people even remotely relevant job skills.
Exactly.
What did we think was going to happen when we sent all of our high paying jobs out of the country?
So many Worthless degrees in fake or worthless subjects from communist/nazi/ leftist bullkrap indoctrination camps — and, not surprisingly, graduates either negative work ethics, zero job skills, and poisonous entitlement type attitudes.
They just pollute the work place. We wouldn’t hire them or even let them in to visit.
(There are still some schools that do a good job — outside of the Ivy League and sone of the big state colleges.)
Kids are encouraged to got to college from the get go. There should be a bigger shift toward trade craft.
