A Las Vegas convict who was seen in a viral video launching a “Superman style” attack on a judge earlier this year was sentenced to decades behind bars Tuesday – even as he bizarrely claimed to care about his victim’s well-being.
Deobra Redden, 31, was hit with a prison term between 26 and 65 years nearly a year after he jumped over Clark County District Judge Mary Kay Holthus’ bench and tackled her to the ground as court staff desperately tried to save her.
Redden was charged with attempted murder following the vicious assault and pleaded guilty to the charge in September.
But on Tuesday, he insisted he had no intention to kill Holthus in the rambling statement.
“I’m not a bad person, I’m not an evil guy,” Redden, who suffers from schizophrenia, said in court to Judge Susan Johnson, according to KLAS.
“I’m not making excuses for my actions, but I’m saying I’m not a bad person and I know that I did not intend to kill Mary Kay Holthus, I know I cared about her wellbeing,” he added.
The attack happened when Holthus was about to sentence Redden in a separate criminal case in January.
He also claimed he only recalls jumping on top of her and grabbing her by the collar of her robe.
“I was like ‘Why are you doing this to me?’ That’s what I wanted to ask her if I think I knew myself but I’m not really sure,” he said as he rattled off the problems he’s faced in his life, including mental health struggles, according to court footage from KTNV.

He did it in Vegas, so he’s staying in. Vegas.
“I’m not making excuses for my actions, but I’m saying I’m not a bad person and I know that I did not intend to kill Mary Kay Holthus, I know I cared about her wellbeing,” he added.
What a maroon.
If they had named him Sue instead of Deobra things have worked out differently…. Or not!
Good thing none of the bailiffs put him in a choke hold.
The name “Sue” made life a bit difficult for this guy. But it all worked out in the end. So you never can tell.
What is a Superman style attack?
Different “Justice” for different classes.
He would have a much different sentence for assaulting a police officer, and a far, far different sentence for assaulting an “ordinary” citizen.
He leaped over a tall building in a single bound to get to her.
That dude in the blue blazer punches like a sissy.
Did he use laser vision? How is this Superman style? The guy (in a parallel universe) can throw planets. This would be more like The Joker.
Deobra?
Turned out to be a mistake, just like the guy who drove his new Subaru Outback through the window of a Utah dealership.
These days people routinely receive much less time for much more serious acts. But she’s one of the elites, I guess.
He should have said it wasn’t him it was Darrel and it’s not fair he should go to prison for something Darrel did just because they share the same head.
“Attempted murder?” I guess prosecutors didn’t want to PO the judge by not going for the max.
I saw footage of that jump. If he’d been recruited into the NFL early in life, he might have done okay. He launched like there was a trampoline in front of her bench.
so just hitting a judge gets an ATTEMPTED MURDER charge!
yet these same judges often don’t even charge that when a black shoots someone!
