“”Did I say it cost 33% less?””

Yes, you did. You do have to wonder what a person gains by buying a short bed pickup....

Just no accounting for some people’s taste as they say!

I have two double cab F-15’s. One is a company car the other was my company car which I purchased.

For the company one, I tow a trailer or have the bed and yes, the back seat well loaded often. It’s full right now for a trip this week.

Correct, I rarely have passengers but we do have stuff.

My personal one just got rigged for overland camping with a rooftop tent, diesel heater, backup battery and refrigerator. I just drove ocean to ocean and got 18-20 mpg. I can’t complain about that.

I’m going to need to order a new company truck in a few months. We’ll see how that goes.

Two rules when buying a new car:

  1. Sell your trade in yourself and get best price for it.
  2. Make the dealer an offer, not the other way around. Know what you want to pay. When I start to negotiate the sale and they start with their best deal etc. I stop them and say I am going to make you an offer.

I got my Ford F150 for $2500. Like me, its older, it’s uglier, but it works like a champ.

Geez, I’m no fan of the UAW but to blame the auto industries obvious incompetence on the assembly line worker is OUTRAGEOUS.

What are your choices for purchase of a vehicle?

The givernment mandated CAFE standards that drove manufacturers to create and market SUV’s because they are considered light trucks and don’t have to conform to the most stringent regulations of CAFE

Ford no longer makes cars as a result
https://www.thedrive.com/news/small-cars-are-getting-huge-are-fuel-economy-regulations-to-blame

No one is buying SUV’s because they are popular.

They are buying them because that is what the manufacturers are producing

When Henry Ford was asked what color the Model-T come in, he responded “you can have any color you want, as long as it is black”

About 25 years ago, I was looking at Model A’s to restore, I didn’t want a car with wood, but I was too tall to comfortable drive a Model A. I started to look at cars in the late 30’s without wood. I realized when looking at them that the seating position and layout were similar to larger SUV’s. What comes around, goes around.

I never understood why most people would want to buy a pickup truck instead of a basic sedan car. Especially at the ridiculous prices they charge for new (a 2024 Ford F150 ranges from $40K for a stripped down no-frills model to over $100K for a fully loaded one).

Now if you live in a rural area and are going to constantly toss firewood, brush, and lots of gear into it, that's one thing. In that case, you are better off getting a used one that is already well worn.

But I know people who have a shiny new F150 that are obsessed with keeping it shiny and clean. They won't even put anything in the back of it without first protecting the finish in the truck bed with some kind of mat or blanket. They will then clean and wax it to make it shiny again!

If you are that obsessed with a clean, shiny vehicle, then just get a standard car.

In the late 80s it was not unusual to see two or three cars a week doing 100 or so. Now I see so many, I don’t keep track. Probably two or three every day.

Just go back to a v6 engine that functions as it should and is easy to work on. Put a cd player in the vehicle and be done with it. Market it as “quality. Nothing else matters” or something to that effect

“You do have to wonder what a person gains by buying a short bed pickup....”

Better maneuverability. And not everyone needs to haul 4x8 plywood, for example. I typically haul stuff that is heavy or bulky but not 8’ long. A 500 pound wood chipper a few weeks ago. A bunch of concrete blocks that my wife wanted for the garden. Sacks of horse pellets (feed) - 80 pound sacks, so 12+ sacks is a load. Doesn’t take up much room, though.

My last 2 trucks? One was a Ford F-150. In 2008, went to the dealer thinking of looking at a small truck. They had 8 F-150s with 6 cylinder engines just arrived and they were on sale for $12,000 each. New. I bought one on the spot. The last one was sold before I finished the paperwork. Good truck. 6’ bed, roll up windows - but just over 13K to drive it off the lot.

My Tundra was one of the last V-8s in stock. The dealer literally had 8 trucks left before the new turbo-charged V6s would be the only thing Toyota sold. I bought one with a 5.5’ bed. Because...that was all they had left. And because I wanted towing capacity and the ability to haul heavy stuff that didn’t take up much room. Fits my needs fine.

Nothing WRONG with a longer bed. My first truck was a 1980 Chevy 6 cylinder with an 8 foot bed.

My complaint now is too many seem to want super fancy trucks with lots of bells and whistles. A bare bones truck is fine by me but not many are made. However, my Tundra is likely to be running after I die and one of my kids inherits it, so....

I miss my 1978 Ford Bronco w/351 Modified and 4 on the floor. I put headers on it and it was great. I kept it for a few years and sold it. Big, BIG mistake.

Everyone drives an SUV because ordinary cars are no longer made. Want a Ford Crown Victoria or Mercury Marquis (both famously popular with old fuddy-duddys)? Fuggeddaboutit. First they took away full-size V8 station wagons, now large sedans.

And lets not overlook the feddie bureaucrats in the dot and epa with their cafe standards and other unconstitutional intrusions into the car market.

In Houston it’s bumper to bumper or bob and weave at 80+

“The Ford eco-boost engines aren’t fussy, and are not prone to failure. “

The first gen 3.5(?)L V6 Ecoboost was rated one of the worst Ford engines ever built. The 2.3(?)L in my wife’s 2019 Escape had a casting flaw that allowed coolant to get into the cylinders and was replaced under warranty along with a lot of those engines.

I’m out on Ecoboost or any of the little overstressed turbocharged gas engines.

I guess I need to take good care of my truck, but I treat it like a truck. I bought it to haul.
