FROM LIEUT.-GEN. GRANT TO SECRETARY STANTON
WASHINGTON, Dec. 2
CITY POINT, Va., Dec-. 1, 1864.
The following dispatch has been received at the War Department:
Hon. Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War:
The Richmond Examiner of to-day admits that SHERMAN will succeed in reaching the sea coast.
Other papers admit that he has crossed the Oconee.
U.S. GRANT,
Lieutenant-General.
Special Dispatch to the New-York Times.
WASHINGTON, Friday, Dec. 2 -- 2 P.M.
A great load of anxiety has been lifted from the mind of President and people by the intelligence from Gen. SHERMAN, communicated by telegraph from Gen. GRANT's headquarters. This news is a day later than that published in the Richmond papers received here to-day, and appears in the rebel journals of yesterday- From these papers we learn that SHERMAN has successfully crossed his whole army over the Oconee River, the principal river he had to traverse before reaching Savannah. His cavalry, thrown out in advance, had already crossed the Savannah River, and was making for Beaufort to communicate with the fleet and announce the near approach of SHERMAN's triumphant columns. From the localizations of SHERMAN's position given by the rebel papers, it would appear that he has turned Augusta, just as he did Macon, leaving it off to the left, and striking for the railroad between Augusta and Savannah. The wisdom of this course is apparent, for he avoids the delays incident to the attack of a strongly fortified position, while he insures its capture by the severance of all the lines of communication on which it depends. The fall of Augusta will be one of the ripe fruits that SHERMAN will reap as the result of his general campaign, and such he intended it to be.

The New York Times eternal infatuation with horrible, unnecessary wars is timeless.
Perhaps the Trump Administration is about to give the states a much needed reprieve from the mindless war machine.
Iirc, Trump has never had a bad word to say about either Pres. Lincoln or Pres. Reagan.
Lincoln won the Civil War, Reagan won Cold War I -- Peace Through Strength, though Reagan demonstrated that excessive strength can win wars without firing a shot.
Throw in Teddy Roosevelt's "Talk softly but carry a Big Stick" and Richard Nixon's "go to China" negotiating skills and you've got the GOAT, Trump.
